Excerpt from The Homer of Aristotle This monograph is intended as a supplement to the writer's edition of Aristotle's Poetics, l the results of which both for text and interpretation are here assumed.2 It was shown there that the initial words of the Defini tion of Tragedy should be rendered literally The feigning of a virtuous experience, which interpreted from the author's ethical and political theories means Fiction about kings and queens. And though the philosopher does not like Plato identify the Homeric style with Tragedy, he holds that in these essentials the two coincide and the Unity which he postulates in Tragedy is found by him to an unsurpassed extent in the Iliad and the Odyssey. The following is an attempt at working out these theorems from the hints which the treatise offers and on the lines which it suggests. The text of the Homeric Poems employed is that of Monro and Allen in the Oxford Classical Series; and the Translations of Butcher, Lang, Leaf and Myers are assumed to be correct, except where differences are noted. General reference is made to the Greek Grammar Of R. Kuhner, the Homeric Lexicon Of H. Ebeling, and the Dictionary of Greek Proper Names of W. Pape for such matters as come within their scope. Excerpt from Aristotle Be ignorant of their names, and that every man who speaks the language of educated Europeans is constantly using their vocabulary. Among this few Aristotle holds not the lowest place. We have all heard of him, as we have all heard of Homer. He has left his impress so firmly on theology that many of the formulae of the Churches are unintelligible. Excerpt from Feminism in Greek Literature From Homer to Aristotle There is a question sometimes put to scholars, a doubt often latent in scholars' minds - How was it that Greek civilisation, with all its high ideals and achievements, fell so easily before what seems at first sight an altogether inferior culture? The difficulty is not solved by a reference to military resources or administrative skill, for moral strength is the only thing that matters in history, and a nation has never yet succeeded merely by pure intellect or by brute force. The fact is - and it is as well to state it plainly - that the Greek world perished from one main cause, a low ideal of womanhood and a degradation of women which found expression both in literature and in social life. The position of women and the position of slaves - for the two classes went together - were the canker-spots which, left unhealed, brought about the decay first of Athens and then of Greece. For many centuries in Ionia and Athens there was an almost open state of sex-war. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Greek Religious Thought From Homer to the Age of Alexander The purpose of this book is to let the English reader see for himself what the Greeks, from Homer to Aristotle, thought about the world, the gods and their relations to man, the nature and destiny of the soul, and the significance of human life. The form of presentation is prescribed by the plan of the series. The book is to be a compilation of extracts from the Greek authors, selected, so far as possible, without prejudice and translated with such honesty as a translation may have. This plan has the merit of isolating the actual thought of the Greeks in this period from all the constructions put upon it by later ages, except in so far as the choice of extracts must be governed by some scheme in, the Compiler's mind, which is itself determined by the limits of his knowledge and by other personal factors. In the book itself it is clearly his business to reduce the influence of these factors to the lowest point; but in the introduction it is no less his business to forewarn the reader against some of the consequences. In Horos, Thea Potter explores the complex relationship between classical philosophy and the ‘horos’, a stone that Athenians erected to mark the boundaries of their marketplace, their gravestones, their roads and their private property. Potter weaves this history into a meditation on the ancient philosophical concept of horos, the foundational project of determination and definition, arguing that it is central to the development of classical philosophy and the marketplace. Horos challenges many significant interpretations of ancient thought. With nuance and insight, Potter combines the works of Aristotle, Plato, Homer and archaic Greek inscriptions with the twentieth-century continental philosophy of Heidegger, Derrida and Walter Benjamin. The result is a powerful study of the theme of boundaries in classical Athenian society as evidenced by boundary stones, law and exchange, ontology, insurgency and occupation. The innovative book will be of interest to scholars in the fields of ancient Greek social history, philosophy, and literature, as well as to the general reader who is curious to know more about classical life and philosophy.

Excerpt from The Iliad of Homer: Faithfully Translated Into Unrhymed English Metre The weakest point of the Greeks, their absurd religion, has its interest and instruction in its eminently childlike simplicity. We see in this people (what may be called) the childish mind magnified, both as to intensity and duration; and through them we can trace step by step the wonderful changes of religious thought, from Homer to Finder and to Plato or Aristotle: but to be familiar first with Homer, is the basis of this contemplation.
