The Implicit Connection

Life itself has no meaning. Life is an opportunity to create meaning. Meaning is not to be discovered. It has to be created. So here I choose to work with kids with diverse learning needs, when I made a connection with a student with severe autism while working with different people during college. I have enjoyed working with all the differently abled children. Although it took a while and took many trials, I was finally able to find a way to communicate with them, and this feeling is really amazing. It was and is very rewarding and also a bit challenging as you may have to try several strategies before you find one that works. One of the most important things for me as an educator is to always talk to my students about how all individuals have their strengths and areas that they find challenging. Sometimes they can express and sometimes you need to teach them how to do so. While supporting students with special needs, we need to point out and celebrate their strengths more and more often. They need to believe that everyone learns differently and sometimes it's going to take more effort or more time for them to do certain things, which is OKAY. What's important is that they learn to advocate for themselves as they get older and state when they don't understand something or ask for help when they need it.

This book is a comprehensive introduction to text forming resources in English, along with practical procedures for analysing English texts and relating them to their contexts of use. It has been designed to complement functional grammars of English, building on the generation of discourse analysis inspired by Halliday and Hasan's Cohesion in English. The analyses presented were developed within three main theoretical and applied contexts: (i) educational linguistics (especially genre-based literacy programmes) (ii) critical linguistics (as manifested in the development of social semiotics) and (iii) computational linguistics (in dialogue with the various text generation projects based on systemic approaches to grammar and discourse). English Text's major contribution is to outline one way in which a rich semantically oriented functional grammar can be systematically related to a theory of discourse semantics, including deconstruction of contextual issues (i.e. register, genre and ideology). The chapters have been organized with the needs of undergraduate students in theoretical linguistics and postgraduate students in applied linguistics in mind.

This volume contains the Kurobane lecture and proceedings of the Tenth International Symposium on Tubular Structures - ISTS10, held in Madrid, Spain, 18-20 September 2003. Navigating the social world requires sophisticated cognitive machinery that, although present quite early in crude forms, undergoes significant change across the lifespan. This book will be the first to report on evidence that has accumulated on an unprecedented scale, showing us what capacities for social cognition are present at birth and early in life, and how these capacities develop through learning in the first years of life. The volume will highlight what is known about the discoveries themselves but also what these discoveries imply about the nature of early social cognition and the methods that have allowed these discoveries -- what is known concerning the phylogeny and ontogeny of social cognition. The purpose of this format was for each piece to focus on a single core message: are babies aware of what is right and wrong, why do children have the same implicit intergroup preferences that adults do, what does language do to the building of category knowledge, and so on. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of two colocated international workshops EPEW 2005 (European Performance Engineering Workshop) and WS-FM 2005 (Web Services and Formal Methods) held in Versailles, France in September 2005. The 20 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 59 submissions. For EPEW 2005 only 10 papers - of the 32 submitted - were accepted for presentation; they deal with queueing theory, bounding techniques, stochastic model checking, communication schemes analysis for high-speed LAN, QOS analysis in wireless ad-hoc networks and optical networks analysis.
