The consequences of changing comparative advantage are transforming the economic landscapes of nations and regions around the globe. This book deals with the most significant economic factors in the rapidly changing Pacific Basin area. Part 1 considers the area's changing patterns of industrial development and trade and examines the general implications of such changes for national industrial development policies. Part 2 consists of a set of case studies of national industrial policies in the context of factors affecting industrial structures; how applicable these policies are to other countries in the region is a central theme. Part 3 addresses the specific issues of foreign investment and domestic labor in relation to economic growth and industrial development in the Pacific Basin. Finally, in Part 4 institutional arrangements are suggested that would facilitate economic growth while, at the same time, mitigating the serious negative consequences of changing economic advantage. Such negative consequences are to some extent pervasive and can destabilize social and political development and endanger formal and informal alliances; nevertheless, the segment of humanity that has adequate food, clothing, and shelter is being permanently widened in the Pacific Basin.

This book is concerned with the management of food production and the distribution of food in the Pacific Basin, exploring food's potential for engendering both increased conflict and cooperation in the region. The authors begin by discussing the role of food and agriculture in the international economy and the implications of two contrasting approaches to food security: international trade and self-sufficiency. They also consider the problem of international migration of labor in the region and look at how agriculture can contribute to the development of the economy in individual countries. The book concludes with a discussion of the prospects for international collaboration in dealing with the domestic and international adjustments required to enhance overall growth and equity in food supply and distribution.

This important volume examines the vast potential of--and critical need for--cooperation among the neighboring states of the Pacific Rim. From economic and security matters to cultural and environmental concerns, the Pacific Century will require increased cross-border education, communication, and cooperation, which can be enhanced by regional organizations and agreements. This work offers a compilation of new thinking from international political, business, and academic leaders on the challenges facing the Pacific Rim in the next century, and proposes the emerging Pacific community as a model for global cooperation.
