The EU-China relationship is fast developing in its own context and in the wider context of international politics. In these essays major scholars from Europe and China debate the nature, problems and potential of the emerging strategic relationship between these two international actors.

Two major themes in contemporary international relations—Sino-European relations and global governance—are both addressed in this volume. In its focused analysis of Sino-European relations, global governance serves as both a topic for analysis and a conceptual framework to join together individual chapters. This accessible text offers a comprehensive analysis of the European Union (EU)-China relationship, as one of the most important in global politics today. Both are major players on the world stage, accounting for 30% of trade and nearly a quarter of the world's population. An exploration of the role of the news media in the development of EU-China relations after the end of the Cold War, this book provides empirical evidence to support what Nye and Anholt have argued: that branding a country's image is soft power. The author examines the nature of European Union and China coverage in Chinese and European news media respectively and explores how the economics, politics, and journalistic practice interplay in shaping the coverage. Based on this analysis, the author delves into the relationship between the news media and their foreign policy toward each other in terms of both the general direction of policy-making and the policy in a specific issue area. Including not only content analysis of media coverage, but also has first-hand interview materials with the officials involved in the decision-making process and the journalists involved in reporting the EU and China, the book sheds light on the way in which the media construct the post-Cold War world and therefore play a role in transforming international relations.

This book examines the changing dynamics of power in the international arena since the end of the Cold War. Brown engages in analysis of how the United States and the European Union have responded to the so-called rise of China through an examination of how policymakers’ perceptions of China have changed over time and influenced their policy choices. This study undertakes rigorous analysis of how these perceptions have evolved between 1989 and 20092016, offering a comparative perspective on the similarities and differences between the policy discourse and behaviour within these two Western powers. Brown argues that ‘China’s rise’ is a contested notion, with varied perceptions of how the implications of China’s ascendancy have shaped policy preferences in ways that are inconsistent with concerns over the threat of an impending power-transition. Combining concepts and methods derived from IR and FPA, the book examines the linkages between great power politics and policymakers’ competing interpretations of key international actors, and their influence upon foreign policies. The main objective of the study is to illuminate the different ways in which the US and the EU have responded to the rise of China through a close analysis of their decision-making processes and outcomes across a series of key encounters and events, including the transatlantic debate over the EU’s proposal to lift its China arms embargo (2003-2005).
