These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The Invention of Lithography: Look inside the book: At last, Herr Alois Senefelder has used the hours that he could spare from his continuous experiments and investigations to write down the history of his labors out of his faithful memory; and also to give a full description of all methods invented by him to this time, accompanied by highly instructive specimen pages, partly made by himself and partly byx artistic friends, but all printed either with his own hand or under his direct supervision. ...Had the stone merely proved available as substitute for copper, I would have returned to copper as soon as I could afford it, despite several advantages of stone, and for the following reasons: first, the necessary weight and thickness of the stones; second, because the printing process was slower than with copper; third, because probably I never would have become sufficiently skilled in the difficult manipulation of washing off; but chiefly, because the necessary spur, the originality of the discovery, would have been lacking, since I remembered that as a child of five or six I had seen a music-printery in Frankfurt or Mainz where the notes were etched in black slate-stone.

Excerpt from The Invention of Lithography When Senefelder wrote, he had to invent many names for the processes, manipulation-methods, and tools. These terms have been translated literally even where modern practice has adopted other names. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Lithography and Lithographers: Some Chapters in the History of the Art Here are endless series of art books - and endless schools of art, endless lecturers on art and art criticism. But so far as I know there are no books on the graphic arts, written or edited, by graphic artists. This series is intended to be a survey of the best work in the past - the work that is admitted to be worth studying - and a definite statement as to the best methods of making drawings, prints, and engravings, written in every case by those who have passed their lives in. Excerpt from Some Masters of Lithography Omissions of certain well-known lithographers will be noticed by those familiar with the sub jcet, and in particular the omission of the repro ductive men, such as aubry-lecomte and Mouil leron. The question of the respective positions of a man who does original work and one who reproduces the work of others is an old one, and I do not care to enter upon a discussion of it here, especially since there is nothing new to be said upon the subject. Suflice it for me to say that while I recognise the important part played by reproductive work in the past, partien larly before the invention of photography, I can not consider a man who merely interprets the work of others worthy to be placed among the great names of art, any more than I can consid er a translator in literature the equal of a great creative writer. The invention in the late eighteenth century of lithography, or "writing on stone," reshaped the course of graphic arts. Some years later, the father of this world-changing technology, Alois Senefelder, published a description of the process. This English translation of the original German work, Vollständiges Lehrbuch der Steindruckerey, vividly describes Senefelder's struggles to develop and popularize the medium and the lithographic techniques employed in the process. The work is divided into two parts: the first presents a history of the invention and its different processes; the second provides practical instructions for its application—the varieties of stone, ink, instruments, paper, and presses used for different tasks, and the pitfalls to be avoided in working with these materials. An essential reference for graphic artists and students, the classic 1819 treatise remains the definitive work on this topic.

Originally written and published in 1818, and long out of print in English, this manual has been reprinted to celebrates the bicentennial of lithography. Senefelder stakes his claim for his discovery of lithography and provides a basic text for practitioners of the art. He narrates the birth and progress of lithography between 1796 and 1817, gives a technical account of relief and intaglio printing methods, and discusses issues with stones, inks, acids, paper, and presses of the day. Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition Illustrative of a Centenary of Artistic Lithography, 1796-1896 This was the first printing from stone of which Senefelder then had any knowledge; and, al though true lithography as we know it to-day (that is, printing from a flat surface) was not evolved by him until two years later, he dates his invention from the time of this happy inci dent, as being the starting-point for all his sub sequent discoveries. Excerpt from Practical Lithography "Alois Senefelder never benefited much by his discovery of the elementary principles of lithography, but none of those to whom it has given profitable occupation will remember without some feeling the patient and persistent efforts of the struggling actor and dramatist who, only after the greatest sacrifices and hardships, laid the germ of this splendid development, and watched and guarded its growth." There is one characteristic feature of the discovery of lithography for which Senefelder ought to receive the fullest credit. Unlike other discoveries of industrial and scientific value, there can be no doubt whatever as to its origin. Senefelder's claim has never been disputed, yet "the payment of a debt of gratitude to the fact is easily overlooked when the wheel of history has made another turn." It has been again and again suggested that the blighting influences of Commercialism have robbed lithography of many of its traditional features and a few, at least, of its best and most artistic qualities as a reproductive art. This same commercial spirit, however, has inspired and encouraged a charming variety of effect both in colour and design, and lithography of to-day, in almost every form of its manifestation, is infinitely more attractive and capable of considerably more expressive power than could ever have been hoped for before commercial utility and value demanded a full recognition.
