The invention in the late eighteenth century of lithography, or "writing on stone," reshaped the course of graphic arts. Some years later, the father of this world-changing technology, Alois Senefelder, published a description of the process. This English translation of the original German work, Vollständiges Lehrbuch der Steindruckerey, vividly describes Senefelder's struggles to develop and popularize the medium and the lithographic techniques employed in the process. The work is divided into two parts: the first presents a history of the invention and its different processes; the second provides practical instructions for its application—the varieties of stone, ink, instruments, paper, and presses used for different tasks, and the pitfalls to be avoided in working with these materials. An essential reference for graphic artists and students, the classic 1819 treatise remains the definitive work on this topic.

Originally written and published in 1818, and long out of print in English, this manual has been reprinted to celebrates the bicentennial of lithography. Senefelder stakes his claim for his discovery of lithography and provides a basic text for practitioners of the art. He narrates the birth and progress of lithography between 1796 and 1817, gives a technical account of relief and intaglio printing methods, and discusses issues with stones, inks, acids, paper, and presses of the day. Excerpt from Practical Lithography "Alois Senefelder never benefited much by his discovery of the elementary principles of lithography, but none of those to whom it has given profitable occupation will remember without some feeling the patient and persistent efforts of the struggling actor and dramatist who, only after the greatest sacrifices and hardships, laid the germ of this splendid development, and watched and guarded its growth." There is one characteristic feature of the discovery of lithography for which Senefelder ought to receive the fullest credit. Unlike other discoveries of industrial and scientific value, there can be no doubt whatever as to its origin. Senefelder's claim has never been disputed, yet "the payment of a debt of gratitude to the fact is easily overlooked when the wheel of history has made another turn." It has been again and again suggested that the blighting influences of Commercialism have robbed lithography of many of its traditional features and a few, at least, of its best and most artistic qualities as a reproductive art. This same commercial spirit, however, has inspired and encouraged a charming variety of effect both in colour and design, and lithography of to-day, in almost every form of its manifestation, is infinitely more attractive and capable of considerably more expressive power than could ever have been hoped for before commercial utility and value demanded a full recognition.
