The year 2019 marks the sixtieth anniversary of the Killdevil Camp and Conference Centre, situated in the scenic Bonne Bay area of Lomond, Newfoundland and Labrador, in Gros Morne National Park. The twofold purpose of this book is to tell when and how the site was acquired in 1959 by the Diocese of Newfoundland and developed over those sixty years, and to hear first-hand the experiences of people who have spent time at Killdevil, particularly campers and staff. Thirty-five people have sent the author stories of their experiences. Some stories pay tribute to certain volunteers who gave many years of service directing camps and to making Killdevil what it is today. Bishop and Mrs. Robert Seaborn came to Newfoundland in 1958, Bishop Seaborn to be the assistant bishop in the Diocese of Newfoundland. They naturally brought with them their experiences and love of church camping and planted the same in what has become known as the Killdevil Camp and Conference Centre. In 1959 a large house known as Killdevil Lodge was purchased on a fourteen-acre site. Bowaters Pulp and Paper in Corner Brook deeded 30.6 acres of adjoining land to the developers. When Gros Morne National Park came to life in Bonne Bay forty years ago, Parks Canada expropriated the Killdevil property and paid out $200,000. From there on the property has been leased and has carried on church camps and conferences. In the beginning the focus was on church camps for children and young people, but almost immediately it expanded to include a conference centre. All the people who pass through the gate at Killdevil are visitors to Gros Morne National Park, which is important to Parks Canada. In addition to the thousands of people who have experienced Killdevil in one way or another, the organizers have had, during the author's time as Bishop of Western Newfoundland, three Boy Scout Jamborees, in 1987, 1991, and 1995. In 1987 there were more than 1,600 scouts and leaders on the site. This book shows through personal anecdotes, historical narrative, and photos the Killdevil experience from its beginnings to present day.

As a young woman, the late Ella Manuel left the busy shipping community of Lewisporte, Newfoundland, for the wider world in the 1920s, but eventually returned to the island, as a single mother, to settle in Bonne Bay. An accomplished writer, broadcaster, journalist, advocate for peace, and staunch feminist, Manuel would leave an indelible mark on the culture she documented and celebrated in her work. Here, biographer Antony Berger expertly chronicles the life of Ella Manuel and incorporates unpublished radio scripts and brilliant extracts from her private journals to bring Manuel to the page in her own words. Brimming with insight and wit, No Place for a Woman? opens an illuminating window on life in twentieth-century Newfoundland, and preserves the work of a truly original Newfoundlander.

In 1884, the Canadian government enacted a ban on the potlatch, the foundational ceremony of the Haida people. The tradition, which determined social structure, transmitted cultural knowledge, and redistributed wealth, was seen as a cultural impediment to the government’s aim of assimilation. The tradition did not die, however; the knowledge of the ceremony was kept alive by the Elders through other events until the ban was lifted. In 1969, a potlatch was held. The occasion: the raising of a totem pole carved by Robert Davidson, the first the community had seen in close to 80 years. From then on, the community publicly reclaimed, from the Elders who remained to share it, the knowledge that has almost been lost. Sara Florence Davidson, Robert’s daughter, would become an educator. Over the course of her own education, she came to see how the traditions of the Haida practiced by her father—holistic, built on relationships, practical, and continuous—could be integrated into contemporary educational practices. From this realization came the roots for this book.

The more than 5,000 terms in this dictionary are of use to multiple disciplines: geographers, architects, planners and students. The terms come from ecology, environmental pollution, conservation, biogeography, animal behavior, evolutionary theory, earth science, botany, and geography. The source avoids political issues, but explains concepts and describes natural processes. It is arranged in alphabetical order with cross-references, especially to embedded definitions. Entries vary in length from one sentence to half a column. The language is fairly technical and this limits the source to high school collections.
