From governesses with supernatural powers to motor-car obsessed amphibians, the iconic images of English children's literature helped shape the view of the nation around the world. But, as Translating England into Russian reveals, Russian translators did not always present the same picture of Englishness that had been painted by authors. In this book, Elena Goodwin explores Russian translations of classic English children's literature, considering how representations of Englishness depended on state ideology and reflected the shifting nature of Russia's political and cultural climate. As Soviet censorship policy imposed restrictions on what and how to translate, this book examines how translation dealt with and built bridges between cultures in a restricted environment in order to represent images of England. Through analysing the Soviet and post-Soviet translations of Rudyard Kipling, Kenneth Grahame, J. M. Barrie, A. A. Milne and P. L. Travers, this book connects the concepts of society, ideology and translation to trace the role of translation through a time of transformation in Russian society. Making use of previously unpublished archival material, Goodwin provides the first analysis of the role of translated English children's literature in modern Russian history and offers fresh insight into Anglo-Russian relations from the Russian Revolution to the present day. This ground-breaking book is therefore a vital resource for scholars of Russian history and literary translation.

First published in 1998, this volume explores how the genre of school stories had become firmly established by the turn of the twentieth century, having been built on the foundations laid by writers such as Thomas Hughes and F.W. Farrar. Stories for girls were also taking on a more exciting complexion, inspired by the ‘Katy’ books of Susan Coolidge. The first five decades of the twentieth century saw further developments in children’s fiction. In this comprehensive volume, John and Jonathan Cooper examine each decade in turn, with alphabetically arranged entries on popular children’s writers that published works in English during that period. 206 different authors are covered, many from the United States and Canada. Each entry provides information on the author’s pseudonyms, date of birth, nationality, titles of works, place and date of publication and the publisher’s name. The artist responsible for a book’s illustrations is also identified where possible. With over 200 illustrations of cover designs and dustwrappers, many of which are now rare and have never before been published, this book will delight collectors, dealers, scholars, librarians, parents and all those who simply enjoy reading children’s fiction.

Moon, the daughter of King Peace in a country called The Land of Ten Thousand Hills, has everything a girl could want, except for two things. First, she never knew her mother, who passed when Moon was born. Her mother's friend and a nanny together worked hard to make up for what could never be replaced. Second, Moon's father was persuaded to marry again. That woman, Ruby, came from a family that knew deep magic. And she did not have a heart to embrace a child who was not her own. Moon follows her father to learn what he does and what he knows as a king who is known to be a great leader, a hunter, and a good man. When Moon turns fifteen, King Peace allows her to visit her sister, who married the king of the Sky country. As soon as planning for this journey begins, Moon's life plunges into chaos. Can Moon, with the strength of her wit and support of newfound friends, save herself? Moon, the King's Daughter, is a fantasy tale from Immaculate Howard, a native of Rwanda who grew up in Uganda, and who for many years taught elementary school students in Washington State.
