This acclaimed biography shines a light on a trailblazing woman who created a classic movie monster—and the author’s quest to rescue her from obscurity. As a teenager, Mallory O’Meara was thrilled to discover that one of her favorite movies, Creature from the Black Lagoon, featured a monster designed by a woman, Milicent Patrick. But while Patrick should have been hailed as a pioneer in the genre, there was little information available about her. As O’Meara discovered, Patrick’s contribution had been claimed by a jealous male colleague and her career had been cut short. No one even knew if she was still alive. As a young woman working in the horror film industry, O’Meara set out to right the wrong, and in the process discovered the full, fascinating story of an ambitious, artistic woman ahead of her time. Patrick’s contribution to special effects proved to be just the latest chapter in a remarkable, unconventional life, from her youth growing up in the shadow of Hearst Castle, to her career as one of Disney’s first female animators. And at last, O’Meara discovered what really had happened to Patrick after The Creature’s success, and where she went. A true-life detective story and a celebration of a forgotten feminist trailblazer, Mallory O’Meara’s The Lady from the Black Lagoon establishes Patrick in her rightful place in film history while calling out a Hollywood culture where little has changed since. This book is an attempt to present a comprehensive view on the aquatic biogeog raphy of a small but very dynamic and complex area of the globe. Luckily, this area, called here the Levant, has attracted much interest in the past and is being increasingly studied in the present. The interphasing between the knowledge of the historical and formative processes and that of the recent distributional aspects is fairly good. The recent years saw also a widening effort which expressed itself in several symposia and monographic books. Therefore I considered it possible to treat the whole subject of the aquatic biogeography of the Levant singlehandedly rather than in the presently widespread manner of an edited book. I am keenly conscious of the shortcommings of my approach of presenting much second-hand information. Possibly this is being compensated by the fact that this book has a more coherent structure and eventually a clearer scientific message. The effort spent in synthesizing the data from the widely different sources hopefully pays off in a presentation which is more easily comprehended by the average reader. For the suspicious reader, I would recommend to read first the closing chapter of this book in which the quintescence of this book and its message is presented in a summariz ing manner.

In this sometimes disturbing and frightening memoir of experiences, interviews, and government documents, Robert Campbell seeks to level the playing field for many atomic veterans after he discovered how great a difference could exist between contemporaneous records and later-reconstructed versions of the same nuclear operations. Using the Freedom of Information Act, Robert tried to match real-time data with the footprints (experiences) of veterans who lived it and compare this information, when possible, to later versions postulated by officials who were not present at these operations. Very interesting reading.

Intrigued by a persistent rumor of a hidden secret his grandfather Don Melchor Garza had kept and carried to his grave, the thirty-nine-year-old Beyong set out from Manila to his hometown of Tigaon in Camarines Sur, Philippines, to meet with his elderly Uncle Pamfilo Interino for a conversation regarding the matter. What he found out from his uncle's roadmap of stories, marred with twists and turns, was a network of women associated with Don Melchor in romantic consensual relationships; but nearly all the women carried an open association with the Spaniard, as Don Melchor was known, except for one woman who dwelt in anonymity and wore an elegant and gleaming bracelet of gold on her right wrist whom his uncle pinned with certainty as the bearer of the secret until another final twist in the colorful adventure saga of the Spaniard occurred unexpectedly to confirm, or negate, Beyong's discovery.
