The characters are all real, and a few of the names only are fictitious, made so for prudential reasons. It is a settled principle of jurisprudence, that the accused must be considered innocent until proved guilty. But this rule is usually reversed by the public. Whenever a person is accused, especially of some heinous crime, the public generally attach more or less guilt to the character of that individual, though proven to be innocent.
