The Link Between Specific Forms Of Online And Offline Victimization

This book features the empirical work of internationally known scholars, providing an in-depth examination of the overlap between online and offline victimization and offending. The vast expanse of the Internet has provided a limitless playground for offenders to prey on those unaware of their predators, or well as those who are intimately familiar with their offenders. However, the Internet does not isolate offenders into mutually exclusive categories. Instead, it has allowed many offenders to use both offline and online platforms to commit crime. It also opened up more opportunity for violation of victims. This volume features two divisions of the American Society of Criminology, the Division of Victimology and Division of Cybercrime, who have joined forces to sponsor a special issue on the overlap between forms of online and offline victimization and offending. International scholars in this book provide a notable spectrum of different forms of this phenomenon, as well as predictors of these behaviors. The Link between Specific Forms of Online and Offline Victimization will be a key resource for academics, researchers, and advanced students of Victimology, Cybercime, Criminology and Criminal Justice. This is a print on demand edition of a hard to find publication. Stalking is defined as a course of conduct directed at a specific person that would cause a reasonable person to feel fear. The Supplemental Victimization Survey identified seven types of harassing or unwanted behaviors consistent with a course of conduct experienced by stalking victims. The survey classified individuals as stalking victims if they responded that they experienced at least one of these behaviors on at least two separate occasions. In addition, the individuals must have feared for their safety or that of a family member as a result of the course of conduct, or have experienced additional threatening behaviors that would cause a reasonable person to feel fear. Eighteen experts in the field of bullying and cyberbullying and the SRSG on Violence against Children, have written a unique contribution from their specific area of expertise, addressing bullying and cyberbullying. Starting with a human rights foundation and children participation, it is followed by examples that show different experiences in developing policies and legislation, including specific dimensions and vulnerable groups to be kept in mind. The publication then provides different examples of the very few evidence-based interventions that have proven to work in the prevention and respond to bullying and cyberbullying in the school and its surroundings, decreasing its prevalence. The publication ends with information on global data and the need for better collection and analysis methodologies; a section addressing some of the specific aspects presented by cyberbullying and the use of information and communication technologies, and ends with an overview of prevalence of bullying and cyberbullying in different regions in the world.

Information technology has had a profound effect on almost every aspect of our lives including the way we purchase products, communicate with others, receive health care services, and deliver education and training. It has also had a major impact on human resource management (HR) processes, and it has transformed the way that we recruit, select, motivate, and retain employees (Gueutal & Stone, 2005; Kavanagh, Thite, & Johnson, 2015). For example, some estimates indicated that 100 % of large organizations now use web-based recruiting (Sierra-Cedar, 2016-2017), and over half of the training conducted in America is delivered using technology-based methods (American Society for Training and Development, 2015). Results of a survey by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) (2002) revealed that technology is one of the major drivers of change in today’s HR departments. In spite of the increased use of technology in the field of HR, relatively little research has examined the acceptance and effectiveness of electronic human resource management (eHRM) methods. As a consequence, practitioners are implementing these new systems without the benefit of research. Thus, the primary purpose of this issue is to review the results of research on a number of important eHRM practices including e-recruitment, e-selection, gamification, e- socialization, e-learning, and e-performance management. It also considers how technology can be used to manage task-based contingent workers, and examines the problems associated with cyberdeviance in organizations. The chapters in this series should be extremely beneficial for HR researchers and practitioners who are employing these new systems.
