Most people want to be able to make valid moral judgments and to respect the ethical values of other cultural groups. Taking Jean Giraudoux's play THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT as a starting point, philosopher Nancy Holland draws on the work of Heidegger and Derrida in an effort to find a middle way in ethics between relativism and foundationalism.

In this work, the subversive madwoman first appropriated by feminist theorists and critics is re-evaluated. This book considers the ways in which madness has been portrayed in writing by women writers. It readdresses the madwoman trope, opening up multiple sites of literary madness, examining places and spaces outside of the ‘madwoman in the attic.’ In particular, a transnational approach sets itself up against a Eurocentric approach to literary madness. Women novelists from the Brontës to the Indian writer Arundhati Roy and Arab writers Fadia Faqir and Miral al-Tahawy interrogate patriarchal societies and oppressive cultures. Female characters who suffer from madness are strikingly similar in their revolutionary subversion of patriarchal environments.

This canon of French literature, Honore de Balzac (1799-1850) is also a major European figure in the development of realism. His work is dominated by an inter-related sequence of novels and short stories, La Comedie Humanine, which charts the idiosyncrasies of French society from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the 1840's. Among the most famous of these are Le Pierre Goriot and La Cousine Bette. Iin this study, Dr Tilby concentrates on the main approaches in practice and discusses some of the earliest responses to Balzac's work. His introduction and headnotes set Balzac's work in context.
