Excerpt from The Making of the Balkan States Within the past hundred years Turkey has lost some what more than two-thirds of her European territory and population. Much the larger part of this loss has gone to make up the four constitutional monarchies that are com mouly called the Balkan States. This study aims to give a brief account of the peoples in these four groups so long under Ottoman rule, and to trace somewhat in detail the movements that have led to their independence. Parts of this field already covered by special treatises have been passed over here quite briefly. The works giving the fuller treatment have usually been cited. Only incidental references are made in this sketch to the other three groups (in Greece, Bessarabia and Bosnia Herzegovina) that have also been completely separated, more or less in the same connection, from Turkey. The chief effort here has been to show the actual working Of the forces that have finally added Roumania, Bulgaria, Servia and Montenegro to the family of European nations. Primarily concerned with current issues in the Balkans since 1989, this book explains why the region has endured such a prolonged and fraught transition to democracy and eventual membership in the European Union. The young and educated have largely left. Governmental crisis and economic stagnation is the norm and much-needed regional cooperation has been suppressed by renewed nationalism. Wars on corruption have proved to be largely rhetorical. Making and Remaking the Balkans offers a systematic study of the issues the entire region faces as it struggles to complete the European integration process at a time when the European Union faces bigger problems elsewhere.

This highly readable and thoroughly researched volume offers an excellent account of the development of seven Balkan peoples during the nineteenth and the first part of the twentieth centuries. Professors Charles and Barbara Jelavich have brought their rich knowledge of the Albanians, Bulgarians, Croatians, Greeks, Romanians, Serbians, and Slovenes to bear on every aspect of the area’s history--political, diplomatic, economic, social and cultural. It took more than a century after the first Balkan uprising, that of the Serbians in 1804, for the Balkan people to free themselves from Ottoman and Habsburg rule. The Serbians and the Greeks were the first to do so; the Albanians, the Croatians, and the Slovenes the last. For each people the national revival took its own form and independence was achieved in its own way. The authors explore the contrasts and similarities among the peoples, within the context of the Ottoman Empire and Europe.
