When a black teen was murdered in a Sydney, Cape Breton park late one night, his young companion, Donald Marshall Jr., became a prime suspect. Sydney police coached two teens to testify against Donald which helped convict him of a murder he did not commit. He spent 11 years in prison until he finally got a lucky break. Not only was he eventually acquitted of the crime, but a royal commission inquiry into his wrongful conviction found that a non-aboriginal youth would not have been convicted in the first place. Donald became a First Nations activist and later won a landmark court case in favour of native fishing rights. He was often referred to as the "reluctant hero" of the Mi'kmaq community.

Originally published in 1951, this is the story of the life and mind of George C. Marshall, soldier and statesman, as told by a distinguished writer whose own background makes him particularly qualified to discuss some of the more controversial aspects of General Marshall’s work since World War II. Robert Payne carefully places George Marshall against the Virginia background from which he came and takes him from there through his education at V.M.I., his experiences as a young officer, the first indications of his genius in World War I, his work between the wars, his colossal achievement as one of the architects of victory in World War II, his ill-fated mission in China, his contribution to the Marshall Plan and his present work in the military effort. Showing in quite an extraordinary way how Marshall represents the strengths and weaknesses of the American tradition, this book’s study of the life of a great contemporary American illuminates the American scene with an insight rarely equalled in a biographical work. This book will shatter some illusions about George C. Marshall, but it will also place him in the perspective of his time and demonstrate that he may be even greater than many of us have thought him to be.

The Marshall Story tells the true and inspiring story of Marshall University's rise from scandal and tragedy to stand among the elite of college football. Despite being a perennial football loser, Marshall's Thundering Herd was much loved by the people of Huntingdon, WV. When a group of well-financed boosters attempts to circumvent recruiting rules, an investigation leads to NCAA probation and the school's expulsion from the Mid-American Conference. Just when Marshall appears to have restored order in the program, a plane carrying the players, coaches and fans home from a 1970 game at East Carolina crashes into a WV hillside, killing all aboard. Undaunted, the school and community recover with the help of Coach Lengyel and inspired staff and players who restore the team's competitive spirit and lay a foundation their successors will build upon to eventually win two national championships.
