Excerpt from The Mining and Metallurgy of Gold and Silver His object has rather been to render this volume practically useful as a record of well-authenticated facts, and of the results of actual experience, than to advance new theories, or to accumulate additional evidence in support of old ones. He has, therefore, contented himself with merely stating the results both of his own observations, and those of others; or at most with suggesting the nature of the forces producing the effects described. He believes that our knowledge of chemical geology is not, as yet, sufficiently advanced to warrant an attempt to form a general theory of the formation of mineral veins. Recent observations and experience appear, however, to lead to three important conclusions. First, that the most productive gold bearing rocks are by no means exclusively confined to the Silurian period; secondly, that aqueous agencies have been, and still are, actively at work in the formation of mineral deposits; and, thirdly.
