Excerpt from The Monomaniac, or Shirley Hall Asylum On glancing my eye over the few lines I have written, I cannot help suspecting, reader, that you have already begun to entertain a doubt of my sanity. Indeed, you do me an injustice; I am not mad. Have yet a little patience and I will prove it. Before proceeding further in the task I have set myself, let me give you a short sketch of my own history, unreservedly, and then judge of me as you please. I have little fear of your verdict, for you will decide honorably, I am sure; and if I once clear up the fact of my sanity, you will have greater faith, I trust, in the recital of the singular adventures I met with during my sojourn in the asylum.
