Excerpt from The Mormons and Their Bible The present treatise is a revision of the book known as The Golden Bible, published by the author some fourteen years ago, containing the substance of lectures he had previously delivered to the Mormons all over Utah. The book as published then met with a cordial reception everywhere, but was too bulky for the largest circulation. The present volume contains only about one-half of the matter, carefully selected from the old edition, with some changes and the introductory chapter on The Mormon Problem, which has never before been published. Excerpt from The Story of the Mormons: From the Date of Their Origin to the Year 1901 Pomeroy Tucker, the author of Origin and Progress of the Mormons (new York, was personally acquainted with the Smiths and with Harris and Cowdery before and after the appearance of the Mormon Bible. He read a good deal of the proof of the original edition of that book as it was going through the press, and was present during many of the negotiations with Grandin about its publication. His testimony in regard to early matters connected with the Church is important. Two non-mormons who had an early view of the church in Utah and who put their observations in book form were B. G. Ferris (utah and the Mor mons, New York, 1854 and 1856) and Lieutenant J. W. Gunnison of the United States Topographical Engineers (the Mormons, Philadelphia, Both of these works contain interesting pictures of life in Utah in those early days. Excerpt from The Mormon Saints: The Story of Joseph Smith, His Golden Bible, and the Church He Founded The peculiar people who colonized the valley of the Great Salt Lake have many admirable qualities commending them to favor; the impartial historian may not shut his eyes to these. Perhaps these virtues are more to be feared than their vices. For, if the beliefs, doctrines, and practices of the Mormons are dangerous to society, there is reason for the gravest ap prehension, and need of the most ener getic measures to render them harmless. Truly marvelous has been the spread of the Mormon faith. Joseph Smith in 1827 proclaimed his discovery of the golden plates whereon was inscribed the Book of Mormon. Three years later the first church was organized with six members; to day, after less than a century, the Mormon faith numbers nearly half a mil lion awdherents It is doubtful whether Christianity had gained that number of converts by the end of its first century. Excerpt from The Story of the Book of Mormon HE story that we are about to relate is a true one. It is the history of the races who lived on this broad land of ours long, long ago. From it we shall learn many lessons of God's great love for man. We shall also learn how often his love has been spurned, how apt his favored children have been to walk in ways of sin, and how prone to disobey his holy law.' It is a story full of light and shade, one which it will be well for all of us to take to heart, for by so doing our faith in God will increase, and we shall be prompted to strive the more earnestly to avoid the evils that others by their misdeeds have brought upon themselves and their posterity. America, the land we love, is, in our Heavenly Father's eyes, choice above all other lands as the home of his sons and daughters, whom he has placed upon this earth. For all God's creatures are not here. He has made many worlds and filled them with his chil dren. How many we know not; they are countless to us. The stars, that shine in myriads in the heavens, are nearly all suns like the one that gives us light; the remaining few are worlds like unto this on which we dwell; and ours is one of the very smallest of them all. To the works of God there is no beginning, neither is there any end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Mormonism Exposed and Refuted: Or True and False Religion Contrasted Forty Years Experience and Observation, Among the Mormons Mormonism, as an institution of religion, is either true or false. Such is its nature, or character, that it is, in the absolute sense, either of God or of Satan. It claims for itself to be strictly of God, and Joseph Smith, its founder, in 1825, claims to have received direct revelations from God to institute and establish a new and distinct religion, to be observed by all mankind as the only divine, God-acknowledged system of religion upon the earth. Smith also claims that angels frequently appeared to him, and directed him to institute what is commonly called the Mormon religion. Hence, he declares that all other forms of religion extant are but of human origin, and are false. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
