Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832) was a popular Scottish historical novelist and poet. Scott was the first English language author to have international popularity during his lifetime. His novels remain popular today. His most famous works include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of The Lake, Waverely, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor. Scott wrote Woodstock when he faced financial ruin, the death of his wife, and the illness of his grandson. Woodstock, or, The Cavalier: a tale of the Year Sixteen Hundred and. is an adventure story centering on the escape of Charles II after the Battle of Worchester. The story begins as a farce yet is it a dark novel. Scott says "it appears that every step we made towards liberty, has but brought us in view of more terrific perils."
