Excerpt from The Old Journey Reminiscences of Pioneer Days The author is one of those who "crossed the plains," an achievement which at the time did not seem great in its inception nor mighty in its accomplishment, so crowded with pleasurable incidents was the journey and so full of the inspiration aroused by the necessities and ambitions of the undertaking were all. As the years have gone, however, and time has not only cast a sort of glamour over the event, but has given men an opportunity to reflect thoughtfully and in calmness and intelligence, that same journey assumes greatness in our eyes, both in inception and in its achievement. It finds a prominent place in the history of the nation, and will ever stand forth among great events. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Pioneer It is with this end in view, to preserve the life of the old days in its many colors, that these recollections are penned. There was more to this life than has been touched by the parlor romancers or makers of moving-picture films. Per haps some day these memories may serve to illumine the historian delving in the human records of the past. And perhaps, also, and this is the author's dearest wish, they may inspire young readers to hold to the hardy traditions of the 'fifties and to keep this spirit alive in a country des tined soon to be densely peopled with newcomers from the long-settled parts of the world. Excerpt from Pioneer Reminiscences My father said that Cape Colony was the finest country he ever saw. The farmers had large ranches with immense flocks of cattle and sheep, and plenty of slaves to take care of them. In some places the wolves were so plentiful in the mountains that they had to gather the cattle in large flocks in the evening and kindle fires at certain distances, with slaves keeping up the fires all night to save the cattle from the wolves. Excerpt from Pioneer Days The stories of early frontier life here pre sented, which are taken from the early his tories of the West and from lives of the frontiersmen and pioneers written by con temporaries and eye-witnesses, introduce the reader to an intimate acquaintance with the Indian races of the country which lies east of the Rocky Mountains. The savage warrior and hunter is presented, stripped of all the decorations with which writers of fiction have dressed him. He is seen in his ferocity and gentleness, in his rascality and nobility, in his boyhood, manhood and old age, and in his wis dom and ignognce. The accuracy and truth of these descriptions of the life and adventures of the period cannot be questioned, and they give us a vivid and inspiring picture of the con ditions under which part of our country was opened up for civilization. Excerpt from Reminiscences of Pioneer Days in Wood County and the Maumee Valley: A Pioneer Scrap Book The purpose of this book is to preserve to the people of Wood county and the Maumee Valley some of the historic facts and interesting incidents of its early days and to present them in an entertaining and readable form. The plan of making it scrap-book-fashion originated with my father and an outline of the work had been arranged by him and left - an unfinished task. The further preparation and compilation was then entrusted to the trained hand of Mr. F. J. Oblinger, who has, with pains-taking care, from a mass of manuscript, notes, clippings and other material, condensed the gleanings of a life time into these pages. I am also under obligations to Mr. John E. Gunckel, of Toledo, for his kindness in permitting the use of a number of cuts from his "Early History of the Maumee Valley." The publication I have undertaken, personally, as a memorial to my father, from whose pen most of the articles have come. Some are now in print for the first time, while others have appeared during his years of active newspaper work. My father's labors in this direction were purely out of love for the work. All history appealed to him, but the early struggles of Wood county pioneers was a chapter so replete with tragic interest, so tinged with romance, so filled with human endeavor and its achievement that it called forth his highest admiration. It seemed fitting, therefore, that the final effort of his life should have been a record of these events and with this thought in mind and the grateful encouragement and friendly interest extended by his old associates, both personally and as members of the Pioneer and Historical societies, I have ventured to complete the work. Excerpt from Reminiscences of Pioneer Life This is not much of a book. But I want you to buy this book, and! Read it. It is a simple story, told in a simple way, of the simple pioneer life as it was lived in the log-cabin homes, on the western frontier, in the long, long ago. And it is every whit true. Freck, the writer, is an old pioneer, one of the com mon people; and the story is written about the common people, and it is written for the common people. And you remember that Abraham Lincoln said, God loves the common people; this is why He made so many of them. Now, be good to yourself, and buy and read this book. This is all I have to say. Good-bye. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
