Excerpt from The Old Regime in Canada "The physiognomy of a government," says De Tocqueville, "can best be judged in its colonies, for there its characteristic traits usually appear larger and more distinct. When I wish to judge of the spirit and the faults of the administration of Louis XIV., I must go to Canada. Its deformity is there seen as through a microscope." The monarchical administration of France, at the height of its power and at the moment of its supreme triumph, stretched an arm across the Atlantic and grasped the North American continent. This volume attempts to show by what methods it strove to make good its hold, why it achieved a certain kind of success, and why it failed at last. The political system which has fallen, and the antagonistic system which has prevailed, seem, at first sight, to offer nothing but contrasts; yet out of the tomb of Canadian absolutism come voices not without suggestion even to us. Extremes meet, and Autocracy and Democracy often touch hands, at least in their vices. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Canadian Types of the Old Régime: 1608-1698 The chapters of this book represent lectures which were delivered recently in Ottawa before the May Court Club. They contain no new mate rial, and use with freedom the works of others. At the same time historical facts can be employed in a large number of different combinations, and here the life of Canada during the Old Régime is approached by a route which as yet seems not to have been followed. The author's aim is to dis cuss various aspects of French colonisation, with out at any point straying far from the concrete. To secure distinctness the examples have been drawn, chapter by chapter, from some one career. Or rather, a single personage has been made the representative of a class, and in considering the large subject with which he is connected, certain features of his experience are rendered promi nent. But this method does not involve the exact portraiture of individuals, nor does it exclude minor figures from the field of the discussion. Excerpt from The Administration of the Old Regime in Canada: A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Law of McGill University for the Degree of Doctor of Civil Law Within certain limits, the introduction of the political forms and institutions of Europe into America, illustrates the tendencies that were then dominant in the older continent. It is easy, for instance, to trace in the constitutions of the United States, the conceptions of kingly power and the relations of parliament thereto, that were prevalent during the reign of George the Third, while the absolutism of Louis Quatorze, is nowhere more apparent than in the paternal government that was established in New France.
