Excerpt from The Olympic Games, Stockholm, 1912 While almost every track event is worthy of a descriptive chapter in itself, there are two which stand out in bold relief, and these are the and 800 meters, the latter being the greater, as it was the means of contributing a new world's rec ord for the half-mile. An extra string had been put at the 880 yard mark, and though the winner hesitated slightly after hitting the finish of the 800 meters, he reached the half mile in I minute 52 1-2 seconds. There in the broad light of day, at a great occasion, among the choicest of the world's competitors, and before the world's keenest experts, all previous marks for the 800 meters and half-mile were blotted out and the new ones substituted were of a caliber simply bordering on the marvelous. The young man to perform the feat was an American and it is still more satisfactory to remember that the second and third were also Americans and that they beat the previous record. The 1912 Olympic Games held in Stockholm, Sweden, were the most "modern" Olympic Games yet celebrated and the most successful of the Modern Era to that date. Much of the success is credited to the influence of Viktor Balck, who is remembered as "The Father of Swedish Sports." The 1912 Olympics also featured new innovations and events. A semiautomatic electrical timing device and a photo-finish camera were used, and the decathlon and modern pentathalon were new events. This work, the sixth in a series on the early Olympics, provides unusually extensive information on the sites, dates, competitors, and nations of the Stockholm games. Results for each event, including cycling, diving, fencing, rowing and sculling, shooting, tennis, water polo, and yachting, among others, are provided.

Prior to the outbreak of World War II, the British presided over the largest Empire in world history, a vast transoceanic and transcontinental realm of dominions, colonies, protectorates and mandates that covered over one-quarter of the world’s land mass and comprised a population of over 450-million subjects. Spanning Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania, over fifty modern nations—currently recognized by the International Olympic Committee—were governed and controlled by the British crown at some stage prior to the gradual dissolution of the Empire. The British World and the Five Rings seeks to explore the relationship between the former British Empire and the Olympic Movement. It pays due regard to the settler dominions, but it also addresses those territories who were less willing partners in the British imperial project. In doing so, the tendency of so-called ‘British World’ histories to promote an apologia for Empire is rejected in favour of a critical approach to imperialism. Combining thorough research with engaging and accessible writing, The British World and the Five Rings is applicable to many fields of Olympic scholarship making it a central work in the growing field of sports studies. This book was published as a special issue of Sport in Society.
