Even within the last few years discoveries have been made which have materially affected the commonly received theory of vision, and have shown that our views regarding the func tions of the principal parts of the organ of sight have been resting on a misconception. These circumstances would alone be sufficient to justify an attempt to popularize the subject of the senses. But there are other more important considerations which have in uenced the author in writing the present volume.
