The Piano Works Of Rachmaninoff Volume V Sonatas Op 28 Op 36

From an earlier Belwin Mills edition, this is Volume 5 of a series of the piano works of the great Russian-American composer. Included are Rachmaninoff's Opus 28 and Opus 36 Sonatas. The Opus 28, in D-minor, in three movements, was completed in 1907 and was introduced in Dresden, Germany. The Opus 36, in B-flat minor, also in three movements, was written and 1913 but was later revised by the composer.

This book contains Variations on a Theme of Chopin, Opus 22, which is based on Chopin's C-Minor Prelude, Opus 28, No. 20; and also Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Opus 42, which is based on Corelli's Sonata for violin, violone, and harpsichord, Op. 5, No. 12 (which itself is a set of variations of the European musical theme, La Folia).

These compositions were written as "picture pieces", though Rachmaninoff did not reveal what each piece was to suggest, preferring to leave that discovery to the pianist. All of Rachmaninoff's Preludes (Prelude in C# minor, Op. 3, No. 2, Ten Preludes, Op. 23, 13 Preludes, Op. 32) are included in this Belwin-Mills edition, and all of the twenty-four major and minor keys are represented in these works. The "Preludes" are among the finest examples of 20th century romanticism for the piano.
