Excerpt from The Question of Anglican Ordinations Discussed We have now to consider, first, the force and meaning of the terms used in this dispensing clause, and then the persons to whom the commission was addressed. It may be taken for granted that in a matter about which so much pains were taken, and so many legal heads at work, every word was used in a strict legal sense. Now with regard to the acts done in virtue of the commission, the words 'in his qum juxta mandatum nostrum per vos fient' appear to refer to their use of a form that was without legal sanction, viz. King Edward's book, which was admitted by Cecil to be 'not established by Parliament.' And in the Register the mention of the book is carefully avoided, and it is only said, published by authority of Parliament.' As regards the defects in persons, the important words are 'conditione, statu, facultate.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The publication of Pope Leo XI11's apostolic letter declaring Anglican priestly orders to be 'absolutely null and utterly void' sent shock waves throughout the Anglican church which continue to reverberate a century later. Today, as Anglicans and Roman Catholics renew their search for greater mutual understanding, all the documents in the debate which led to the issue of ,Apostolicae Curae are brought together in English translation for the first time. This unique and important book is published with two aims in mind. Firstly, to set out the evidence so that those concerned with the same questions today may better understand the limited context of the verdict reached in 1896 and secondly, in the hope of dispelling the frustration and resentment still provoked, to demonstrate the thoroughness, fairness and wide spectrum of opinion whih characterized the original debate.
