Excerpt from The Realm of Nature, an Outline of Physiography It is the aim of this volume to illustrate the principles of science by applying them to the world we live in, and to explain the methods by which our knowledge of Nature has been acquired and is being daily enlarged. An attempt is made to define the place of physical science in the sphere of human knowledge, and to show the interrelations of the various special sciences. The greater part of the book is occupied by an outline of the more important facts regarding the structure of the Universe, the form, material, and processes of the Earth, and the relations which they bear to Life in its varied phases. Such descriptions must necessarily be brief, and they are consequently apt to appear more dogmatic than the discoveries of science warrant; but care has been taken to minimise this result. References to original memoirs are given in cases where the facts or theories are not yet fully accepted, and the student is urged whenever it is practicable to read and study these works. The Fahrenheit scale of temperature and the British system of weights and measures are used throughout, as these are most familiar to the class of readers expected. The division into numbered paragraphs is intended to facilitate the frequent cross-references, which are necessary in order to bring out the interdependence of the various departments of Nature. It has been the writer's purpose to select those series of facts which serve to show the continuous Opera tions of. Energy, so that the reader might be helped to a truer conception of the nature of this sphere than he can obtain from ordinary text-books. In the usual method of presenting the elements of the earth's history the facts are set forth in a manner which leads the student to conceive that history as in a way completed. The natural prepossession to the effect that the visible universe represents something done, rather than something endlessly doing, is thus re-enforced, with the result that one may fail to gain the largest and most educative impression which physical science can afford him in the sense of the swift and unending procession of events. Verbatim reports were taken on the former occasion, as it was my intention to publish the course. But I am sorry to say that, in this, as in other cases, I have found a great gulf fixed between intention to publish and its realization. Seeing a book through the press is a laborious and time wasting affair; greatly aggravated, in cases such as the present, by the necessity of superintending the execution of maps and figures. And, as I never could muster up the courage, or find the time, to undertake the business, the manuscript remained untouched until last year.
