The Reverend Neelak Serawlook Tjernagel (1906-1989) graduated from Lutheran Theological Seminary in Thiensville, Wisconsin, and earned his MA and PhD degrees at the State University of Iowa. Research grants provided for fourteen months of post-doctorate studies at the British Library in London. After several years in the parish ministry Tjernagel served as a high school principal and college professor.
