Possessing limited oil and gas resources by regional standards, the emirate of Sharjah has worked hard to develop a more thoroughly diversified economic profile in order to drive growth. Efforts have evidently paid off, with its GDP increasing by more than 32% between 2010 and 2015, fuelled largely by its strong manufacturing and logistics industries. Another major growth area is financial services, which accounted for 10.3% of GDP in 2015 having grown by an average of 12.7% per year over the past half-decade. The UAE’s third-largest economy after Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Sharjah has also established itself as a leading centre of higher education in the region with its sprawling University City and the 1997 founding of two of the UAE’s most prestigious higher education institutions, the University of Sharjah and the American University of Sharjah. Another economic engine is tourism, as Sharjah is a key regional destination for family-oriented and cultural visits, attracting large numbers of arrivals from the Gulf, Europe and Asia.

New excavations conducted across the United Arab Emirates over the last few years are presented here, revealing a wealth of new data on all periods of UAE archaeology from the Palaeolithic to the recent past. Some of these discoveries fill important gaps in our knowledge, while others have fundamentally revised what we thought we knew already.

Dubai has continued to meet its targets in becoming the global capital of Islamic finance, nearly doubling the number of sukuk (Islamic bonds) listings on its exchanges since 2017. Furthermore, eased policy restrictions to encourage foreign investment and the 2019 budget’s continued commitment to infrastructure development ahead of Expo 2020 are expected to continue driving economic activity. As one of the most diversified economies in the region, Dubai continues to present growth opportunities in various sectors including tourism, logistics, manufacturing and education. The Gulf region witnessed an extraordinary rift when, on 5 June 2017, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain cut all diplomatic ties and imposed a siege on the State of Qatar following the hacking of the Qatar News Agency website. This book approaches the Gulf crisis from an interdisciplinary perspective by bringing together a group of top scholars from a wide range of disciplines and areas of expertise to engage in a nuanced debate on the current crisis. With the pressing role of media in general and social media in particular, new political realities have been created in the region. Why did the Gulf monarchies – and the UAE in particular - avoid the upheavals and challenges of the Arab uprisings? This book examines how the UAE survived the waves of regional unrest. It departs from attributing regime survival to rentier state theory and instead offers a more nuanced approach to understanding the pillars of regime legitimacy upon which the UAE now rests. In doing so, the book sheds light on the transformation of the UAE from a quietist state, which relied almost entirely upon an overseas security guarantor, to an assertive regional power in its own right. Written by an Emirati author who understands the internal dynamics of the country, the book examines the state's proactive foreign policy and the changing domestic and regional environment influencing its decisions.
