Excerpt from Richard Judkins' Wooing: A Tale of Virginia in the Revolution I was sitting in an arm chair with my feet upon the hand rail of the verandah -very much at my ease - when Major Bullbeggor rode around the bend of the turnpike and came into view. I watched him lazily and noted the action of his mare's hind feet as she threw little jets of dust off to either side. Excerpt from The Transition in Virginia From Colony to Commonwealth The following study is not a discussion of the Ameri can Revolution with Virginia as a text or point of departure, but rather of the Revolution somewhat strictly within the limits of Virginia. Those events have been taken in which the future leaders of.the movement first took part, - the purpose being to show the body of experience which the leaders possessed as they approached the year 1776, when independence was declared. It was originally intended to close the study with the adoption of the Constitution in June, 1776, but the revision of the laws and the religious struggle seemed sufficiently typical of the revolutionary movement to warrant some discussion beyond that point. I cannot, however, make any pretence of offering a complete treatment of these two topics, for post - revolutionary adjust ment in Virginia is a subject for detailed investigation by itself. Excerpt from The Virginia Committee System and the American Revolution This study of the Virginia committee system in its rela tionship to the American Revolution has been made in the main from source material, much of which has been utilized by writers who have studied these committees as isolated units rather than as parts of a well developed system. The author believes that an institutional and historical continu ity runs through the committee system of the Virginia legis lature, and that these committees are connected in a vital and intimate way with the so - called revolutionary commit tees of the transition period from colony to commonwealth. To show the continuity, to explain the organization of the committees of the Virginia House of Burgesses, and to show their part in the calling of the first Continental Con gress is the purpose of this study. It was at first intended to include the results of an investigation of the so-called revolutionary committees (the Virginia Committee of Safety and the local committees) but any adequate treat ment of these organizations would have carried this study far beyond the usual limits of a dissertation. I have fol lowed out the activities of these committees and hope soon to publish my findings as a continuation of this study. Excerpt from Virginia First The name First given to the territory occupied by the present United States was Virginia. It was bestowed upon the Country by Elizabeth, greatest of English queens. The United States of America are mere words of description. They are not a name. The rightful and historic name of this great Republic is "Virginia." We must get back to it, if the Country's name is to have any real significance. II. Virginia was the First colony of Great Britain, and her successful settlement furnished the inspiration to English colonization everywhere. For it was the wise Lord Bacon who said that, "As in the arts and sciences the 'first invention' is of more consequence than all the improvements afterwards, so in kingdoms or plantations, the first foundation or plantation is of more dignity than all that followeth." III. On May 13, 1607, the pioneers brought over by the Sarah Constant, the Good Speed, and the Discovery arrived at Jamestown on James River, and Founded the Republic of the United States based on English conceptions of Justice and Liberty.
