Jesus: His Story in Stone is a reflection on still-existing stone objects that Jesus would have known, seen, or even touched. Each of the seventy short chapters is accompanied by a photograph taken on location in Israel. Arranged chronologically, the one-page meditations compose a portrait of Christ as seen through the significant stones in His life, from the cave where He was born to the rock of Calvary. While packed with historical and archaeological detail, the book’s main thrust is devotional, leading the reader both spiritually and physically closer to Jesus.

Many times when the author saw the bedouins of southern Sinai excavate their wells in the crystalline rocks, from which this part of the peninsula is built, the story of Moses striking the rock to get water came to mind. The reader will, indeed, find in this book the description for a rather simple method by which to strike the rock to get water in the wilderness of Sinai. Yet this method was not invented by the author nor by any other modem hydrogeologist, but was a method that the author learned from the bedouins living in the crystalline mountains of southern Sinai. These bedouins, belonging to the tribe of the Gebelia (the "mountain people"), live around the monastery of Santa Katerina and, according to their tradition, which has been conftrmed by historical research, were once Christians who were brought by the Byzantine emperor, Justinian, from the Balkans in the 6th century A. D. to be servants to the priests of the monastery. They know how to discern places where veins of calcite fIlled the fractures of the granites; such places are a sign of an extinct spring. They also know how to distinguish an acid hard granite rock, and hard porphyry dike from a soft diabase dike. The latter indicated the location at which they should dig for water into the subsurface. In Chapter 9, the reader will ftnd a detailed description of how they used this knowledge to extract water from the rock.

Like Moses delivering forth the Ten Commandments, Chunklet magazine presents you with The Rock Bible—the complete rules for living an authentic life of rock ’n’ roll. Here are hundreds of wise and witty guidelines for Drummers: “If you’re one of those drummers who sets up at the front of the stage, back the hell up. You are the goalies of rock; play your position.” Singers: “When you feel like stage-diving, first make sure the people in the front like your music enough to catch you.” Guitarists: “No one’s looking at your guitar strap. Don’t ever spend more than the cost of an average meal on something that can be replaced by a particularly hearty piece of string.” Keyboardists: “There’s only one person who will look more ridiculous and offensive in leather pants than the lead singer: the keyboard player.” Onstage Antics: “Being wasted onstage works for only about 5 percent of bands, and yours isn’t one of them.” Fans: “Fans that dress like the band are just asking to be pummeled. If you want to be in the band that badly, you might as well bring your gear to the show and play along from the audience.” And unholy words on much, much more.

The most well-known of all Christian symbols is the cross, but right behind it is the Rock of Ages, and it is this symbol of our faith that Bishop Lester unfolds in this study. This study looks at the different ways the rock is presented to us in the scriptures, and what that has come to mean for us as Christians. That also means to look at every aspect of rocks and stones in creation around us and, by comparison, glean what is being told for us to do. He also gives us all the Bible passages so that we can evaluate the meaning of each passage in relation to the topics covered. It is a clear and concise look at the various aspects of the rock and how it relates to us in our relationship with God and opens up on what it can mean to our Christian walk today and in our approach to our Bible studies.
