The ratification of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 was the culmination of a lengthy and contentious peace process that involved the efforts of a committed team of political actors. In 2001, Marianne Elliott brought together a collection of essays by many of these pivotal figures in The Long Road to Peace in Northern Ireland, an invaluable resource for students, scholars, and politicians. Now Elliott, one of the most prominent chroniclers of Irish history, presents a fully updated edition with new essays commissioned to explore the events of the past five years. A period that saw successes such as the decommissioning of the Provisional IRA but also a rise in drug trafficking and organized crime, as a generation of men who have done nothing other than serve as paramilitaries are now finding their skills most valued as criminals. With contributions from U.S. Senator George J. Mitchell, Sir David Goodall, Jan Egeland, Lord Owen, and Peter Mandelsohn, the second edition of The Long Road to Peace in Northern Ireland is an illuminating record of the ongoing peace process—and its consequences—told by the people directly involved in its evolution.

Why did American policy delay black emancipation and official enlistment until 1863, and what were the blacks’ motives for enlisting at all? This study investigates black soldiers’ participation in the American Civil War and the struggles on their way to equality. By coming in thousands, fugitive slaves forced policy to finally tackle the hushed-up issue of slavery. First I will investigate the political background, starting with introducing the three main parties in the emancipation debate, and continuing with the political steps toward official enlistment and the reactions of society to these developments. Secondly, I will focus on the black soldiers’ motives, including influences that had shaped them and obstacles which prevented emancipation in practice, and finally I will explore the war’s results for the black population. Even though it is not expected that the movie Glory, which is frequently quoted, conveys an accurate and historically verified picture of the Fifty-Fourth Massachusetts, it gives a possible perspective of the blacks toward the war. This study focuses only on black soldiers and not on black participation in the war in general.

Even before she knew him, God was working in L. J. Hannas life. Though she grew up in the Catholic Church and practiced Catholicism, Hanna did not invite Jesus Christ to be her Lord and Savior as a girl. But later, on that glorious day when she accepted him into her heart, her life changed forever. The Rocky Road shares Hannas emotional story of how she went from a child who simply realized he existed to a woman who made him the center of her life. She had no idea, though, how God would reveal himself to her in the coming years. Hanna recounts the ways God began working his will through her. Whether it was through dreams, encounters with angels, or the interpretation of tongues, Hanna allowed herself to remain open to Gods message. But it wasnt all positive. Hanna not only struggled with those who mocked her and accused her of false doctrine, but also experienced terrifying demonic encounters. Yet even through this, the Lord made Hanna stronger and increased her faith, enabling her to overcome challenges both big and small. Deeply sincere and honest, The The Rocky Road is an inspiring testimony of faith, love, and courage, and definitively shows the power of Christ in our lives.
