Excerpt from The Roman Catholic Church and the Public Schools The address upon The Roman Catholic Church and the School Question, which has the first place in the following pages, was delivered in connection with the now somewhat famous text-book controversy in Boston in the autumn of 1888, and was published at that time in pamphlet form. The address upon the question, Has the Parochial School Proper Place in America? Was given before the National Educational Association, at Nashville, in July last. The writer declined the invitations for its publication at the time, as it was his desire to expand and strengthen that portion of the address devoted to the subject of moral training in the public schools. The leisure for this revision has never come, and the address is given here almost untouched. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Educational Conditions in Nova Scotia: Showing How the Excellent Non-Sectarian Public School Law Is Violated in the Interest of the Roman Catholic Church We protest against this disintegrating and disconcerting legis lation. At the rate we are going, we may find ourselves one day without a Public School in the full sense of the term. A few more 'explanatory amendments, ' and the trick is done. There is, as everybody knows, a Dominion -wide movement on the part of the Church of Rome, to attain this goal. We do not blame them. They are quite frank about their designs. They have a right to their own religious opinions. But we do blame and condemn those who lend the power of the legislature to this end. Excerpt from Rome's Attack on Our Public Schools We would much rather our children should grow up in ignorance than be taught in a school that is not Catholic. Freeman's Romish Journal says: Let the pub lic school system go to where it came from - the devil. We want Christian schools, and the State cannot tell us what Christianity is. The Cincinnati Catholic Telegraph says It will be a glorious day for the Catholics of this country, when, under the blows of justice and morality, our school system will be shivered to pieces. Cardinal Manning says: The common school system of the United States is the worst in the world. Father Walker declares, Unless you suppress the public school system, as at present conducted, it will prove the damnation of this country. Excerpt from National Schools for Manitoba Probably the most conclusive reply to the cry Of Godless schools is the fact that in the Public Schools of Ontario, where the religious exercises are the same as in Manitoba, Roman Catholic children, two-thirds of the Roman Catholic children of Ontario, are being edu cated in the National Public Schools. In his celebrated speech on Provincial Issues - The Religious Cry, at Hamilton, during the local campaign Of 1886, the Hon. Edward Blake pointed out that Principal Caven, the head Of the Knox Presbyterian Theological College, Provost Body, the head Of Trinity University, one Of the Theo logical Colleges Of the Church of England, Principal Nelles, the head Of Victoria, the Methodist University, and Prin cipal Castle, the head of the Baptist College, had agreed upon the form of undenominational religious exercises in the Ontario public schools, Of which the religious exercises in the public schools Of Manitoba are practically a copy. The churches said Mr. Blake, approached each other; they agreed to co - operate with each other, and I thanked God for it. I thanked God for it because I thought it was an indication that we were beginning to sink, in some degree, our sectarianism, and to realize our points of agreement; to recognize more and more how much there was that we all held together Of the fundamental common truths of Christianity. I thanked God for it because I thought it pointed to a broader, more generous, more Christian feeling, which boded great good for the church, and for the world. He further drew attention to the fact that the late Archbishop Lynch, the head Of the Roman Catholic Church in Ontario, did not Object to the introduction Of these undenominational religious exercises into the public schools Of Ontario, although it was at those schools that two-thirds of the Roman Catholic children of the Province received their education. Excerpt from Church and School in the American Law It was this feature which is primarily responsible for the fact that one church the Roman Catholic staunchly retained its parochial school system built up during the time when there were no public schools in the present - day acceptation of that term. Such schools, whether they retained the reading of the Bible, the saying of prayers, and the singing of religious hymns, or whether they abolished these customs, were about equally objectionable to the Church of Rome. In the first case it was the Protestant Bible that was read, it was Protestant hymns that were sung, and it was Protestant prayers that were uttered. In the second case it was felt that a godless school could not but produce a godless generation of men and women. With great determination the Catholics there fore now assumed the' double burden of supporting not only their Own schools, but also the public school system, which was rapidly growing in size. Excerpt from The Catholic View of the Public School Question: A Lecture, Delivered in the Hall of the Cooper Institute, Sunday Evening, January 16, 1870 The following lecture is only the substance of the discourse which I had the honor to give in the 000per Institute on Sunday evening last. I have written it out from my memory of what I then said, for two im portant reasons, - first, to avoid all possible misunder standing of the Catholic View on so important a sub jcet; and secondly, to put on record the arguments which I then brought before the American public. Many, also, who were not able to be present, may wish to know the nature of the claims which we address to that sense of justice which eminently belongs to our countrymen. The immediate occasion of the lecture is explained by the following correspondence. I take this Opportunity to thank the distinguished gentlemen who honored me by their consideration, the audience who received me with so much kindness, and the es teemed members of my own congregation, to whom I feel myself largely indebted.
