But during the past decade since "The Rose" was written by the late Henry B. Ellwanger, a host of new varieties have been produced and disseminated in the United States and in Europe. Those which have proven themselves most worthy to be retained have been included with their descriptions in the subjoined catalogue, the additional varieties being indicated by an asterisk. Additional works on the subject, and magazines and periodicals relating to it, have also been carried out to date.
