The Sandhills An Historic Cemetery

The Sandhills is a nonfiction book about a famous and historic cemetery in Sydney, Australia. Excerpt: "The name Devonshire Street Cemetery could fairly be applied to those sections which faced or extended to that street, but is somewhat of a misnomer when describing the original Burial Ground, which faced Belmore Park. For lack of a better name, I and others refer to it as the "Sandhills Cemetery."

While now known as America's summer playground, Newport was at one time the nation's fifth-largest seaport, containing a diverse population that is reflected in its burial sites. Of special significance is the largest marked site for eighteenth-century African Americans in the country, as well as the oldest surviving colonial Jewish burial site. A Graveyard Preservation Primer has proven itself to be a time-tested resource for those who are seeking information regarding the protection and preservation of historic graveyards. It was first written to help stewards of early burial grounds responsibly and effectively preserve their graveyards. Much information found in the first edition of the book remains valid today. Still, much has changed in the twenty-five years since its first publication, and the new edition reflects these changes.
