Excerpt from The Science of Etymology The object of the present volume is to draw attention to some of the principles that should guide the student of etymo logy in general, and of English etymology particularly; in order that any one who employs an etymological dictionary may be able to do so with some degree of intelligence and to some profit. It is much easier to accomplish this at the present date than it was some ten or twenty years ago. The steady progress of the New English Dictionary furnishes us with innumerable and indisputable instances of the actual usages of English words, so that the mistakes which formerly arose from a very imperfect knowledge of their history have largely been corrected, and much that was once obscure has been made plain. Meanwhile, the great gains that have resulted from the scientific study of comparative philology as applied to the Indo-germanic languages have been properly formulated and tabulated, to the explosion and exclusion of many hasty inferences that were both misleading and mischievous. It is now possible to introduce science where once there was little but guesswork. Such science is founded, as all science should be, upon the careful observation of the effects of well-ascertained laws. Excerpt from Principles of English Etymology The present volume is intended to serve as a help to the student of English etymology. In my Etymological Dictionary, the numerous examples of similar letter - changes are invariably separated from each other, by the necessity for adhering to the alphabetical order. It is therefore advisable to re-arrange the results so as to shew what words should be under consideration at the same time. It is only by a com parison of this character that the various phonetic laws can be properly observed and tested. I have found it advisable to follow the example of Mr. Sweet, in his History of English Sounds, and to consider what may be called the 'native element' of our language apart from the Romance or imported element. Hence I have purposely excluded all words of French origin from the present investigation. A few French words are quoted here and there by way of illustration, but no inferences are here drawn from the results which their history furnishes. If the present volume should meet with approval, I propose to issue another volume, to be entitled 'second Series, ' Which will deal particularly, and almost exclusively, with the words which have been imported into English from French, as well as from Latin, Greek, and other languages (except Teutonic and Celtic) af/er the N orman Conquest. Excerpt from An Etymological Dictionary of the German Language ON the completion of the present work, it is to me a pleasant duty to express my thanks to all those who have rendered its execution possible, and have helped to give it its new shape. I might have mentioned, under the separate words, those scholars who have discovered any etymological data bearing upon the vocabulary of our mother tongue; the vast extent of etymological literature deterred me, however, from doing so. There is no Teutonic scholar or linguist of any repute who has not by his researches either helped to determine the etymology of some German word or actually settled it. It would have been an extremely toilsome and yet useless task to give the name of the discoverer of the etymology of each word and how frequently have several scholars at the same time deserved credit for clearing up the history of a word. 0. Schade, in his Old German Dictionary, has with untiring industry collected materials from the copious literature for the older period, and has received the thanks of specialists. I could not expect that those who may use my book would wade through the numerous errors and occasional imperfections of scientific investigation in order to form their own opinion on the evolution of particular words. By foregoing such a plan I obtained space, in spite of the limited compass to which this book was confined, to describe pretty fully the actual development of the word itself. Excerpt from Exercises on Etymology The English tongue presents so great a variety of elements, that the study of its Etymology affords an acquaintance with many other languages, tending to familiarise the student not only with modern German - one branch of the same Teutonic family as that to which English belongs - but also with Greek and Latin - and with French, Spanish, and Italian, which the dead languages originally helped to form. Many efforts have been successfully made of late to render the access to Latin and Greek inviting to the pupil, by a knowledge of Latin roots existing in English words; but as yet little has been done in school-books to make the existence of Teutonic words in our language available for ascertaining the roots of Saxon-English words, and for familiarising the memory with the kindred words of the modern German. This want is attempted to be supplied in the present volume. But Etymology should have higher aims. It should exhibit the roots of a language which has long since ceased to be spoken; and, connecting these with those of other vanished tongues, lead to the recognition of a language the common parent of many others, and to the confirmation of the truth of one primitive language. Etymology should also point out the similar character of all lingual changes - a similarity arising from the common nature of man. These subjects have occupied the attention of eminent modern philologists; and in few departments of science or literature have such instructive discoveries been lately made as in those which concern the transmigration of languages. The Exercises and Extracts in this volume, therefore, have been so arranged, as to lay the basis of such habits of inquiry as will lead the learner into the right track of general, as well as of philological, investigation. Excerpt from An Etymological Dictionary of the English Language Owing to the large number of corrections which the use of the newer method renders imperative, I took the opportunity, in 1901, of printing an entirely new edition of my Concise Etymological Dictionary, first issued in 1882, and partially corrected in four later editions the result being that the edition of 1901 entirely supersedes all that preceded it.
