The publication in 2009 of C. G. Jung's The Red Book: Liber Novus has initiated a broad reassessment of Jung’s place in cultural history. Among many revelations, the visionary events recorded in the Red Book reveal the foundation of Jung’s complex association with the Western tradition of Gnosis. In The Search for Roots, Alfred Ribi closely examines Jung’s life-long association with Gnostic tradition. Dr. Ribi knows C. G. Jung and his tradition from the ground up. He began his analytical training with Marie-Louise von Franz in 1963, and continued working closely with Dr. von Franz for the next 30 years. For over four decades he has been an analyst, lecturer and examiner of the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, where he also served as the Director of Studies. About the Author Alfred Ribi was born in 1931. He studied medicine in Zurich, followed by specialization in Psychiatry and Psychotherapy FMH. In 1963, he began analysis with Marie-Louise von Franz—a close associate of C.G. Jung—and subsequently worked for many years as a colleague with Dr. von Franz. He is a diplomat of the C.G. Jung Institute, Zurich, where he has served as Director of Studies, a teaching and control analyst, and a lecturer and examiner of the Institute. He is past President of both the Foundation for Jungian Psychology and of the Psychological Club in Zurich. The book was edited and includes a Foreword by Lance S. Owens. It was translated into English by Mark Kyburz.

Jungian psychology based on a little known treatise he authored in his earlier years.

This book examines the influence of Gnostic philosophy on Jungian psychology as indicated by Jung's essay, 'The Transcendent Function' (1916), and his Gnostic-inspired treatise, The Seven Sermons to the Dead (also written in 1916). Relevant and timely due to the relatively recent publication of Jung's The Red Book, the hypothesis of this work is that the Seven Sermons is the mythopoetic, metaphysical twin of 'The Transcendent Function' and that these texts can be considered as two sides of the same coin. The Seven Sermons formed a prelude to everything Jung was to communicate about the unconscious-in other words, an embryonic form of the principal tenets of analytical psychology can be found in a Gnostic-inspired text. As Gnostic philosophy was the inspiration for both texts, this book also highlights correspondences between both of Jung's works and the Gnostic texts of the Nag Hammadi Library, paying particular attention to the theme of the opposites-arguably the crucial theme at the very heart of Jung's psychology.

Gnosticism was for C.G. jung the chief prefiguration of his analytical psychology. In this volume Robert Segal, an authority on theories of myth and Gnosticism, has searched the Jungian corpus for Jung's main discussions of this ancient form of spirituality. The progression in Gnosticism from sheer bodily existence to the release of the immaterial spark imprisoned in the body - and the reunion of that spark with the godhead - represents for Jung the psychological progression from ego consciousness to the ego's rediscovery of the unconscious, and the ego's integration with the unconscious to forge the self. Included in this volume are both Jung's sole work devoted entirely to Gnosticism, "Gnostic Symbols of the Self," and his own Gnostic myth, "Seven Sermons to the Dead." The book also contains key essays by Father Victor White and Gilles Quispel, whose "C.G. Jung und die Gnosis" is here translated for the first time. In his extensive introduction Segal discusses the parallel for Jung between ancient Gnostic and contemporary Jungian patients, the Jungian meaning of Gnostic myths and of the Seven Sermons, Jung's possible misinterpretation of Gnosticism, and the common characterization of Jung himself as a Gnostic.

This paper was originally presented in a Symposium: "Creative Minds in Dialogue - The Relationship between C. G. Jung and Erich Neumann." Symposium at Pacifica Graduate Institute, Santa Barbara, California, June 24–26, 2016. Erich Neumann (1905-1961) was indisputably one of C. G. Jung’s most brilliant and creative disciples. Publication in 2015 of the correspondence between Neumann and Jung—Analytical Psychology in Exile: The Correspondence of C. G. Jung and Erich Neumann—has opened new perspectives on the work of both men and stimulated a resurgent interest in Erich Neumann. Neumann’s encounter with Jung, begun in 1933 at age twenty-nine, was the transformative event in his life. But to a degree, the influence eventually went both ways; Neumann induced new perceptions in Jung. From the mid-1930s onward, interchanges with Neumann enhanced Jung’s understanding of the mystical depths of Jewish tradition, particularly of Kabbalah and early Hasidism. Neumann undoubtedly played a crucial role in Jung’s astonishing declaration—recorded in 1955, during an eightieth birthday interview—that “the Hasidic Rabbi Baer from Meseritz, whom they called the Great Maggid” was the person who “anticipated my entire psychol-ogy in the eighteenth century.”

Gnosis traces the use of powerful gnostic visionary techniques from Hellenistic Gnosticism and Jewish merkabah mysticism, through Muhammad, the Ismaeilis, and theosophical Sufism to medieval neoplatonism, and renaissance alchemy.

Do we, like Jung, need to leave the spirit of the time and follow the spirit of the depths, to call out "my soul, where are you?" through the windows of our now post-modern homes? We live in a digital world of incredible virtual inter-connectedness but at the same time fragmented and divided on many levels, including the psychological. The pace of life is rapid and ever accelerating. The spirit of the time is flux: It twitters. There is no sense of coherence in the whole. The guidance of a transcendent North Star is invisible to the naked eye of consciousness. Our existential crisis is not about the individual alone. It infects the entire human world, like the Covid-19 pandemic. Wars between cultural brothers and sisters, increasingly dire effects of climate change, economic disruptions, hunger, migration-these conditions affect everyone on the planet. Is there a spirit of the depths that can take us through this Inferno, perhaps toward the emergence of a meaningful narrative that can stabilize the global community and provide a collective sense of "supreme meaning?" This is the search for soul in the 21st Century.
