Excerpt from Fantastica: Being the Smile of the Sphinx and Other Tales of Imagination Two of these tales have appeared in serial The Smile of the Sphinx, in the first number of the London Mercury, and Sir Perseus and the Fair Andromeda, in the English Review. Both tales have been slightly revised. Golgotha which, since the writing of the Preface, has grown to be the most ambitious of these tales, appears in print for the first time. I should like to remark that a volume of amusing and well-written stories entitled The Pilgrim of the Smile, in which sundry characters go in search of the secret of the smile of the Sphinx, appeared about a year after the publication in the London Mercury referred to above. I lay no charge of plagiarism to the Witty Norman Davey, though the coincidence appears unusually striking. I merely wish to clear myself of any such charge. Excerpt from Cupid and the Sphinx N Mr. Story's studio at Rome, last year, I saw a cast for a beautiful group of Cupid and the Sphinx, which suggested the title of my story. The Sphinx has arms, according to the artist, and one of them is thrown gracefully across her body, while her head and shoulders are half turned back wards, with the beginning of a smile upon her lips, as though surprised into amusement at the unparalleled audacity of Cupid, who has alighted upon her back, and is in the act of proposing a problem to her with an unconsciousness which is quite bewitching. Excerpt from Facing the Sphinx If we contribute our mite towards the revival of the ancient mode of thought, which can be found partly in the Bible, if understood, and partly in the sacred and profane literature of Egypt, India, Per sia, Chaldea, Central America, China, Greece, Rome, etc. We will be amply rewarded. For to dispel the clouds of ignorance which are still hanging over the human intellect, is to conquer and uproo't wickedness. Let us eat of the fruit of the tree of Paradise, so that, by acquiring the knowledge Of good and evil, we may always be wise enough to choose good and eschew evil. Excerpt from The Sphinx's Children and Other People's Once to all things comes their hour. The black column of basalt quivers to its heart with one keen lightning thrill that vindicates its kin to the electric flash without; the granite clifl' loses one atom from its bald front, and every other atom quails before the dumb shiver of gravitation and shifts its place; the breathing, breathless marble, which a sculptor has rescued from its primeval sleep, and, repeating after God, though with stammering and insufficient lips, the great drama of Paradise, makes a man out of dust, once, once, in the deadness of its beauty, that marble thrills with magnetic life, drinks its maker's soul, re peats the Paradisiac amen, and owns that it is good. Yea, greater miracle of transcendental truth, once. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
