Directional Solidification of Steel Castings summarizes the results of a large number of investigations, mostly scientific in character, on the directional solidification of steel castings. The influence of design on the technical possibilities of producing casting in the foundry is examined. Diagrams, simple basic rules, and formulae are provided, along with many practical examples. This book is comprised of 16 chapters and begins with an introduction to the technical and psychological aspects of steel casting before turning to a discussion of the influence of shape and dimensions on the time it takes for castings to solidify. The thermal gradient, feeder heads, and cavities in steel castings are then considered. In particular, the effect of the thermal gradient on solidification and feeding range are examined. Methods for increasing the thermal gradient in the casting are described, including the use of mold heating pads, breaker cores or Washburn cores; external cooling (iron chills); cooling fins; internal chills; and exothermic pads. Cavities in steel castings which are commonly mistaken for true shrinkage cavities are also analyzed. This monograph is particularly suitable for foundry managers, foremen, technicians, casting designers, and students.

This practical guide presents a comprehensive account of solidification processes in metals and alloys and describes the manner in which cast structure arises. Reviews the principle features of solidification theory in an accessible and easily understood manner. Relates the solidification and cast structure process to different industrial processes such as conventional casting, continuous casting, welding, and rapid solidification. Provides concise descriptions of structure formation in cast steel, cast iron and aluminum. Includes treatment of cast ceramics, glass, metal-nonmetal structures, rapid solidification, welding, and continuous casting processes.

Metallurgy and Technology of Steel Castings is a comprehensive textbook for students and professional engineers in the field of foundry engineering and materials science. The topics covered in this book explain the association between the quality of liquid metal and the properties of the finished cast. Readers will learn about the thermodynamic conditions for addition and recovery of chemical elements (such as Cr, Ni and Mo) in steel, degasifying processes, the influence of alloying additives for manufacturing steel castings that operate in extreme temperatures, anti-corrosive steels and basic cast conditions for making the castings (pouring and heat treatment systems). Metallurgy and Technology of Steel Castings gives readers essential information about steel and steel cast manufacturing processes and equips them with the knowledge to overcome the challenges faced in the foundry environment.
