Excerpt from The Sphinx and Other Poems The Sphinx I Had a dream in the night. Waking, how strange, it seem'd! If I recall it aright, This is the dream I dream'd. I know not how or why, But I walk'd in the desert alone; And ever the wind went by With a moan like a human moan. Darkness hung o'er the world, Only I noticed soon A banner of cloud unfurl'd Over a phantom moon. And I wist not whence I came, Nor whither my footsteps sped, In that land without a name, That country of the dead. Then, sudden, a moonbeam burst Over the dismal place, And I saw, as one accurs'd, The Sphinx's great stone face; Where cold, austere, sublime. Since first the ages ran, She watches the flight of time And the tragedy of man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Poems of Egypt: And Other Poems Many of my friends have requested me to publish my poems in book form. Heretofore I have never felt justified in doing so; but now I have consented that my son, I. Ed Thomas, edit them, and publish a number of the best ones, in this autograph edition of three hundred copies; and it is with pleasure that I dedicate the volume to my friend, Ezra Crane, who inspired me to start writing at the age Of sixty. Excerpt from Egypt, Other Poems They piled them to the sky, where clouds are rolled Around their summits at a dizzy height, Stupendous still as when they blest Sesostris' sight. Live on, great Thebes What though the desert sweep O'er other cities, be thou still the same; Thou wast the cradle, art the couch of Sleep, Where genius rests: and yet no loftier name Stands up against thee with a better claim, A stronger grasp on immortality. Where is the nation that has fixed its aim So near perfection, or can rival thee? Unique must be its life if it undying be. Proudly, O Nile, thy sacred water glides, Gemmed with a coronal of gorgeous fanes Thebes, the transcendent, o'er the whole presides; Thy rugged hills are cleft, and on thy plains The pomp of kings in silent grandeur reigns. Temple and tomb and palace, side by side, Stand ruined all; yet Time himself maintains Deep reverence o'er their dust, as far and wide And desolate they stand amid their pristine pride.
