A beautifully illustrated Penguin Hardcover that invites readers to travel the night sky and discover the universe of stories in the stars To those who can decipher it, the night sky is alive with gods and goddesses, animals and mythical creatures—an endless carnival played out in shining constellations. Amidst this jet-black canvas pricked with white dots, a hunter leaps in pursuit with his dogs at his heels, a sea monster threatens a maiden in distress, and a pair of twins lives forever. In Stories in the Stars, writer and stargazer Susanna Hislop and international artist Hannah Waldron present an imaginative journey through the heavens. Leaping between centuries, cultures, and traditions, they explore each of the night sky’s eighty-eight constellations through gorgeous illustrations and vivid descriptions that will linger in readers’ minds long after they’ve closed the book and stepped outside on a starry night.

Follow an epic animal race, a quest for a disembodied hand, and an emu egg hunt in constellation stories from diverse cultures We can see love, betrayal, and friendship in the heavens, if we know where to look. A world expert on cultural understandings of cosmology, Anthony Aveni provides an unconventional atlas of the night sky, introducing readers to tales beloved for generations. The constellations included are not only your typical Greek and Roman myths, but star patterns conceived by a host of cultures, non-Western and indigenous, ancient and contemporary. The sky has long served as a template for telling stories about the meaning of life. People have looked for likenesses between the domains of heaven and earth to help marry the unfamiliar above to the quotidian below. Perfect reading for all sky watchers and storytellers, this book is an essential complement to Western mythologies, showing how the confluence of the natural world and culture of heavenly observers can produce a variety of tales about the shapes in the sky.

It's not always easy to find the 88 constellations, but this illustrated guidebook will lead you through the stars and make gazing at them a more meaningful experience. Two larger maps portray the entire northern and southern sky, and all the constellations in it. Because the stars put on different seasonal shows, another set charts the changes that take place in the heavens during the year. Still more pictures present a close-up view of every single constellation, filled with detail. (You'll see an image of the real or imaginary creature it's named after, too.) And, there's so much great information accompanying the super visuals: facts on how far away the stars really are, other interstellar phenomena, the history of every constellation and how they got their names, and the best way to do your star searching. A Selection of Children's Book-of-the-Month Club.

From the PREFACE. My purpose here is to interest the child in the stars, which are always with him; to stimulate his imagination; and to direct him in a pastime-the hunting out of the constellations and individual stars-that may become an enduring joy. With the help of the oblong charts and their duplicates, in which Miss Boroughs has placed the animals, he can learn the constellations separately and in groups, with the ancient mythic animals in their places; and by using the round charts at the back of the book, he can see the sky as a whole, as it appears from our Northern Hemisphere during the different seasons, and trace out the smaller or less important constellations which I have not given. A good way to learn the configurations that form the constellations is to draw them. If the charts are held over the head, with the cardinal points in the proper places, the stars can be seen as they are in the sky; or the same result can be obtained by one who sits facing the south and holds the charts with the north end upwards. If any child has as much pleasure in reading this book as I have had in preparing it, or obtains a broader outlook upon life from its perusal, all my efforts will be fully repaid.

The heavens — the sun, the stars, and the moon — have inspired, intrigued, and mystified us from the beginning of time. We’ve always searched for ways to comprehend their beauty and their meaning. Mohawk artist and author C. J. Taylor has drawn from First Nations legends from across North America to present a fascinating collection of stories inspired by the night skies. The legends — Salish, Onondaga, Blackfoot, Netsilik (Inuit), Wasco, Ojibwa, and Cherokee — are by turns funny, beautiful, tragic, and frightening, but each one is infused with a sense of awe. From the Ojibwa legend of the great hunter, White Hawk, and his love for an unattainable maiden, or the Salish legend of a magical lake that is threatened when human beings turn greedy and lose their respect for its gifts and for the sun’s power, to the delightful Cherokee legend of Grandmother Spider who brought light to the world, this is an important collection that is enhanced by Taylor’s glorious paintings.
