Excerpt from The Story of the Scottish Covenants in Outline This short sketch was written as an Introduction to the recent edition of the late Rev. J. H. Thomson's "Martyr Graves of Scotland." The publishers having now resolved to issue my sketch separately as a convenient summary of the covenanting struggle, I have revised and considerably enlarged it. No Englishman, it has been said, can distinguish the National Covenant from the Solemn League and Covenant. It is to be feared that many Scotchmen are in the same case. The Covenants, indeed, have been sadly mixed up even by native historians; and comparatively few people seem to have any idea of the number of these religious bonds. This incredible history presents a precise overview of the events of 17th-Century Scotland. The author, David Hay Fleming, delivered an accurate report on The National Covenant (1638) and the Solemn League and Covenant (1643), the defining agreements of two different phases of the mid‐17th‐century Covenanting Revolution. The National Covenant was signed by the people of Scotland in 1638, resisting the suggested reforms of the Church of Scotland by King Charles I. On the other hand the Solemn League and Covenant was an agreement between the Scottish Covenanters and the heads of the English Parliamentarians in 1643 during the First English Civil War. Fleming included the names of the famous personalities linked with the events and the several places and dates of their occurrence. In addition, he wrote several unknown facts about the subject that keep the readers curious throughout. It's a perfect read for history beginners and enthusiasts.

Excerpt from Treasury of the Scottish Covenant Many of the documents here given at length, it is true, - much of the literature connected with the Covenant can only be regarded now in the light of curiosity, - can be preserved only as the pot of manna, which was laid up before the Lord, or like the sword of Goliath, as a trophy of the victory gained over the Philistines. But the thoughtful observer will perceive that our boasted liberties have been secured in part by the aid of humble instrumentality of a literary kind as really as by such heavy artillery as Lex Rex, Gillespie's Dispute, or the Informatory Vindication. Some of the documents, however, - indeed all of them, bear to be read in the light of the nineteenth century, and very specially as the two hundredth anniversary of the glorious Revolution approaches. Not that the writer is one of those who imagine that Scotland has been lying under a curse for the space of two hundred years, - who maintain that nothing will be right politically or religiously till we return as a nation to every iota of the Covenant and to every mode of action set in operation by our forefathers. The truth is that the Covenant, pure and simple, is as little adapted to the present age as the lamps and pitchers whereby God delivered the Midianites into the hands of Gideon would be found adapted to modern warfare. These were the right weapons in an age long bygone, when the cry was The sword of the Lord and of Gideon. And the Scottish Covenant, with its watchword also, has been an instrumentality as manifestly owned and blessed of God in times less ancient. We are now, however, in advance of the Covenant and were the Covenanters to rise out of their graves at this moment we feel convinced they would have no compunction in regarding as laggards such individuals as they chanced to find clinging unreasonably to the past, vainly endea vouring to stereotype any particular age, however good. On the other hand we feel assured they would search out the men of Issachar, to whatever Church they belonged men that had understanding of the times to know what Israel ought to do. Excerpt from The Fifty Years Struggle of the Scottish Covenanters, 1638-88 The following Work was originally prepared as a Course of Lectures, which I have delivered, at intervals of leisure, in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, and several other of our large towns. This will account for the direct style of address which frequently occurs throughout the volume. It will be seen that this little work does not pretend to be an exhaustive history of the period selected, or properly a history at all. It is only a series of descriptive sketches, meant to represent in outline the successive phases of the Covenanting struggle. The subject is a noble one for a history, having an epic completeness - a beginning, middle, and end - with its clearly-defined half century; and I hope that some one having more ability, and more time than I have for literary labour, will yet under take the task. The main body of the narrative has been based on a careful collation of the best authorities - those contemporary, or nearly contemporary with the events. Amongst the host consulted and analysed. Excerpt from The Covenants and the Covenanters: Covenants, Sermons, and Documents of the Covenanted Reformation The Covenants, Sermons, and Papers in this volume carry the readers back to some of the brightest periods of Scottish history. They mark important events in that great struggle by which these three kingdoms were emancipated from the despotisms of Pope, Prince, and Prelate, and an inheritance of liberty secured for these Islands of the Sea. The whole achievements of the heroes of the battlefields are comprehended under that phrase of Reformers and Martyrs, The Covenanted Work of Reformation. The attainments of those stirring times were bound together by the Covenants, as by rings of gold. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
