There is a growing concern in the United States medical community about the lack of practicing physicians available to meet the need of our growing healthcare demands, and yet there are many hopeful medical students who are the unfortunate bearers of rejection letters from U.S. medical schools. However, there is a second route to attaining the Doctor of Medicine degree that has become a viable and reputable choice for many. This ?road less traveled? is Caribbean medical schools. Students abroad enter the U.S. every year with sponsored visas by American hospitals to attain the credentials to practice medicine; so why not American students? The stringent admissions policies and limited seats available in United States medical schools have allowed these schools to accommodate a massive insurgence of applicants. Could this be an option for you?The Student Doctor Network Caribbean Medical School Primer tells a personal account of a doctor?s journey through offshore medical school, gives first hand answers to questions, and provides information that is not freely expressed by websites and catalogs. Let this book help you make the right decision and be your step by step guide to realizing your dream: becoming a doctor.?Dr. Yarbrough does a nice job consolidating just about all the information an overwhelmed, first-year medical student would need to know in a well-organized and easy to read handbook. It could also be worthwhile reading for a parent or spouse of a student in order to give them insight into what their family member is embarking on and investing in for the next four years.? - Eunice Koh, M2- Ross University School of Medicine?I believe that Dr. Yarbrough?s The Student Doctor Network Caribbean Medical School Primer is an excellent book and will be of great benefit to prospective medical students to Caribbean medical schools. This book does not only prepare students for living in the Caribbean and attending school in a foreign environment, it also highlights facts about the U.S. medical degree and practice in general.?- Dr. Gina Letang

It is commonly known that the application process to medical school is competitive. From our experience, about 1% of students who express an interest in becoming a physician during their first year of undergraduate studies, eventually matriculate into medical school. While pursuing a career in medicine remains a dream for many and is considered the endpoint of a journey, many different paths can lead towards that destination. Given the significant time commitment required for a successful application, the decision to pursue medicine is one of the biggest decisions many high school and undergraduate students face. However, many applicants do not look beyond gaining the coveted admission letter and are then left with an incomplete understanding of what medical school entails, and the diverse career paths they can take after obtaining their MD. One of the primary reasons for this is that despite significant progress made in recent years, medicine remains a “closed door” career. A large proportion of students in our medical class had at least one immediate relative within the profession, which is also reflected in the literature. The barriers created by such exclusivity make it difficult for those who have not been socialized into the profession from a young age to navigate the unspoken pitfalls of the admissions process. This book attempts to break down some of those barriers. It focuses on every component of the medical school application process. It differs from the many other books written on this subject by taking an experiential approach. We believe that the best way to learn about medical school acceptance is to garner advice from those who have recently achieved that milestone, as well, as from individuals in related professions who can provide valuable insights. This guide is divided into ten chapters, each of them covering an important step along a premed's journey. While this book has a focus on North America, we have written this guide with a global audience in mind, as many of the concepts discussed are relevant to any medical school application process. As such, although the key components of the application process to medical school remain the same across various training systems, not every chapter will be equally relevant to every reader. Typically, an application is composed of academic performance, volunteer activities, research projects, medical college admission test performance, and extracurricular activities. We have combined the prescriptive style of most books of this type with detailed stories of how real people navigated their personal journeys to reach successful outcomes. This guide shares a broad range of perspectives on what it takes and means to be a physician. We are more convinced than ever that amongst applicants who have the academic credentials, those who seek mentors and network early within the profession, be it through family or friend circles, and those who learn from their mistakes are accepted earlier. This book will help you in that journey towards medical school acceptance and an exciting career in medicine! Jiayi Hu, MD Manveen Puri, MD, CCFP Sameer Masood, MD Aly Madhavji,CPA, CA, CMA, CIM

Despite significant demand for healthcare professionals in the workforce, admission to health professional graduate programs is highly competitive with less than half of all medical school applicants gaining admission annually. The application process is nuanced, complex, and costly, which can often be a significant barrier to otherwise highly qualified students, particularly those from backgrounds underrepresented in the healthcare workforce. Further understanding of the best practices in navigating the application processes, academia, and professional development is crucial for those advising pre-health students. The Handbook of Research on Advising and Developing the Pre-Health Professional Student considers current practices and research regarding academic and extracurricular preparation of undergraduate students who wish to enter health professions and offers new pre-health professional advisors as well as more seasoned advisors and other administrators a resource to assist them in their professional journey. Covering a range of topics such as advisor relationships and lifelong learning skills, this major reference work is ideal for advisors, healthcare professionals, academicians, researchers, practitioners, scholars, instructors, and students.
