The study examines how academic libraries are serving their institution’s distance and blended learning programs, including the impact of the rapid development of MOOCs and the increasing use of lecture capture in online courses. The study looks at staffing, budgets, salaries and other nuts and bolts aspects of college library programs to serve distance learners. It also probes how librarians communicate with distance learners – through online information literacy courses, online tutorials, instant messaging and a strong presence on course management systems, among many other ways. The study offers hard data on the percentage of distance learning librarians that archive and use lecture capture materials, their spending on licensed films and other intellectual property for distance learners, and the ways that librarians track contacts with distance learning students and much more.

This report looks closely at how libraries are servicing distance learning programs. It looks at how these programs have impacted library purchasing, particularly of eBooks and audio visual resources, and at how libraries are providing information literacy courses and tutorials to students at a distance. The study also give detailed data on the size of distance learning library services staff, their salaries, whether they have independent budgets, and how they relate to the college distance learning program staff itself. Other issues discussed include copyright and licensing issues, shipping costs, assessment, role in student orientation and role in use of course management systems. Data in the report is based on a survey of more than 70 distance learning programs and is broken out by size of college, size of distance learning program and type of college.

The study looks closely at how 37 academic libraries are serving students in MOOCS, blended and distance learning programs and how they plan to serve them in the future. Just a few of the report's many findings are that: 22.22% of MA or PHD granting schools, 25% of research universities, 37.50% of 4-Year degree granting colleges, and 43.75% of community colleges in the sample offer some kind of distance education course in information literacy. 40.54% of those sampled had at least on full time position devoted exclusively to distance learning students. For colleges that had at least one full time staffer, the mean numbers of FTE library positions largely devoted to the needs of distance learning students were: 1.06 for MA/PHD granting institutions, 1.33 for 4-Year degree granting colleges, 1.75 for community colleges, and 2 for research libraries.
