Excerpt from The Teaching of English in the Secondary School The present is beyond doubt a period of significant change in the field of secondary education. Under perfect conditions, gradual and continuous readjust ment to the changing demands of -a dynamic society should be characteristic of education at all times. In the past, however, perfect conditions have never obtained and in all probability the future will fail to provide them. The history of education shows clearly that the school does not promptly react to changes in social demands, that educational readjustment is seldom gradual, and that desirable changes in education, neglected for the time, gradually increase in number and importance until by the pressure of accumulated force they compel extensive and' radical reorganization at irregular intervals. There is every evidence that the present is one of those periods when the accumulation of long-needed changes is compel ling radical readjustment in the secondary school as well as in other departments of the system of educa tion. Excerpt from Suggestions to Teachers of English in the Secondary Schools Attention has been directed of late to the lamentable condition of English instruction in the secondary schools. It is discovered not only that English has been neglected for other subjects, but that English is, itself, especially difficult to teach. That English has been neglected is the fault of parents and the general public more than of teachers. In the majority of American homes little or no reading of the English classics obtains; and insistance upon the use of pure English in speaking and writing is left generally to the schools. That English is difficult to teach follows from the ease with which both teacher and pupil may shirk the English lesson. The instructor has a smattering of the subject; the pupil thinks that he knows all about it. Each is prone to contemn what appears to be easy. The Executive Committee of the English Association have authorized the publication, not necessarily because they endorse the views expressed, but because they consider that the discussion and ventilation of all kinds of Opinion on the subject of the teaching of English are likely to stimulate thought and arouse interest in its development. Excerpt from The Teaching of Latin in Secondary Schools The keynote of modern pedagogy is a protest against tradition, whether in subject-matter or in methods of presentation. No subject of instruction has, when compared with other studies of the curriculum, so long a tradition behind it as has Latin. Inasmuch as every study in our modern system of education must, as is fitting, prove its ability to secure a definite result of actual worth, we shall first attempt to ascertain what credentials it needs to present to prove its right of admission as a subject of instruction. Unless a study can be correlated with something in the lives of our pupils - we are dealing with boys and girls of high-school age - then that study is useless; as idle as the inquiries of Tiberius at Capri when he wished to discover what song it was that the Sirens sang. It is true, that the mere fact of knowing something - Ah! la belle chose que de savoir quelque chose! - may enthuse a student for the moment, no matter whether the thing learned has some connection with vital matters or not; but later, when he perceives its isolation, the reaction may take the form of a violent protest against the whole subject of which the mental gymnastic was a part. Of this fact the writer can recall two instances, the one connected with arithmetic, the other with English grammar. His teacher in arithmetic insisted that in a case of division of fractions he must not invert the divisor and multiply, but work instead by the method of finding a greatest common divisor.
