Marcus Brutus, a Roman politician, considers Emperor Julius Caesar to be a friend, but a senator—Caius Cassius—convinces Brutus that Caesar has too much power. Brutus would rather Rome be a republic than an empire ruled by a tyrant, so he participates in a conspiracy to kill Caesar. Though Brutus believes his actions will benefit Rome, Caesar's murder brings about more bloodshed, including Brutus's own. The play examines friendship and patriotism, the succession of leadership, and the roles of fate and free will. Julius Caesar is a tragedy by William Shakespeare that shows the conspiracy against Julius Caesar and his murder. Although the main character is Julius Caesar, he doesn’t play a big role in the play; after appearing a couple of times he dies in the beginning of the third scene. The central figure (and the longest role) belongs to the main conspirator Brutus who struggles with the feelings of honour, patriotism and friendship. Last Caesar’s words «Et tu, Brute» (“And you, Brutus?”) is one of the most famous line in the tragedy.
