The Transcultural Critic Sabahattin Ali And Beyond

The central theme of this volume is the work of Sabahattin Ali, the Turkish author and translator from German into Turkish who achieved posthumous success with his novel Kürk Mantolu Madonna (The Madonna in the Fur Coat). Our contributors analyze this novel, which takes place largely in Germany, and several other texts by Ali in the context of world literature, (cultural) translation, and intertextuality. Their articles go far beyond the intercultural love affair that has typically dominated the discussion of Madonna. Other articles consider Zafer Şenocak’s essay collection Deutschsein and transcultural learning through picture books. An interview with Selim Özdoğan rounds out the issue.

Cultural texts born out of migration frequently defy easy categorization as they cross borders, languages, histories, and media in unpredictable ways. Instead of corralling them into identity categories, whether German or otherwise, the essays in this volume, building on the influential work of Leslie A. Adelson, interrogate how to respond to their methodological challenge in innovative ways. Investigating a wide variety of twentieth- and twenty-first-century texts that touch upon "things German" in the broadest sense—from print and born-digital literature to essay film, nature drawings, and memorial sites—the contributions employ transnational and multilingual lenses to show how these works reframe migration and temporality, bringing into view antifascist aesthetics, refugee time, postmigrant Heimat, translational poetics, and post-Holocaust affects. This book offers contemporary perspectives on different registers of instruction, media language, the effectiveness of a multi-literacies program for introducing English as a Foreign Language, promoting religious tolerance through literature and music, teaching drama, intercultural communication, gender studies and literature studies. By using contemporary research methods, the contributors here offer insights into the ways in which the world of languages and literatures changes and evolves to face the constant challenges resulting from new instructional practices and research investigations, allowing educators, researchers and students alike to keep up with, and stay current in, all areas relating to language and literature. These illuminating essays highlight the dynamic global prism through which contemporary scholars view these issues and surpass any strict set of rules, which would otherwise lead them to ignore the ever-shifting changes in language and literature and the accompanying cultural spaces and realities.

Die Beiträge in diesem Band widmen sich der Bedeutung von und dem Umgang mit Werten in Literatur, Literaturwissenschaft und Werbung im türkisch-deutschen Kontext mit besonderem Fokus auf dem Werk Selim Özdoğans sowie Untersuchungen zu Texten von Emine Sevgi Özdamar, Deniz Utlu und Cihan Acar. Dieser Schwerpunkt wird durch ein Ausschnitt aus der englischen Übersetzung Özdoğans Romans Die Tochter des Schmieds, ein Gespräch des Autors mit den Übersetzerinnen und Berichte und Rezensionen ergänzt.

Zwischen den 1920er und 1950er Jahren existierten in Paris sowohl liberale als auch konservative Kunstakademien. Besonders begehrt war die Académie André Lhote (1885-1962), die von 1925 bis 1962 operierte. Diese zog eine bemerkenswerte Zahl von internationalen Künstlern und Studenten an. Aufgrund des sehr guten Zustands seines Archivs können wir heute davon ausgehen, dass während vier Jahrzehnten an die 1600 Studenten bei André Lhote in Montparnasse, 18 rue d?Odessa und an seinen Landakademien (L?Académie aux champs) in Mirmande (seit 1926), Gordes (seit 1938) und in Cadière d'Azur (seit 1948) studierten. André Lhote and His International Students ist eine Sammlung von 13 Aufsätzen. Diese verweisen auf den bedeutenden Beitrag von André Lhote an der Verbreitung von spezifischen Regeln im Umgang mit formalen und theoretischen modernistischen Trends. Diese Regeln vermochte er sowohl durch seinen Unterricht, aber auch durch seine Kunstpraxis und seine Schriften zu vermitteln. Dabei leistet dieses Buch nicht nur eine Hommage an einen zu Unrecht vernachlässigten Künstler, Theoretiker und Lehrer, sondern untersucht zugleich, wie Künstler aus allen Regionen der Welt durch ihre Aufenthalte in Paris zum Projekt zur künstlerischen Moderne beitrugen und diese re-interpretierten. André Lhote and His International Students ist ein Bericht über eine mikrokosmische Version des kosmopolitischen Paris, welches durch den Fluss und die Zirkulation tausender einzelner Künstler aus der ganzen Welt geprägt wurde.

The author aims to expand the definition of Turkish American literature beyond fiction written by Americans of Turkish descent to incorporate texts that literally 'commute' between two national spheres. Her analyses include literary works of Elif Shafak, Halide Edip, Güneli Gün and Alev Lytle Croutier.
