The Elsie Dinsmore Novels, Martha Finley, in our opinion is the author of the best Series of novels that we have seen in our forty-three years of reviewing. Written by Martha Finley, an unmarried teacher of the last century, these novels proved to be a means of conveying her deep love for Christ Jesus. She loved her Lord, she loved His Word, and this love was passed on to His sheep through the writing of by far the best and most Biblical novels you will ever read or see. Altogether there are 28 of these novels, all built around Elsie Dinsmore, her immediate family, her extended family, and her neighbors.

A pious young girl has difficulty establishing a relationship with her wordly father who seems indifferent to her religious principles.

Martha Finley was a 19th century American author of children's stories. Her characters were good children rewarded for their high moral character. She wrote Elsie Dinsmore in 1867. Elsie was a virtuous Christian girl who resisted small temptations. This book was enormously popular. Finley wrote 27 books about Elsie taking her through her adult life and ending with her as a grandmother. This series was popular in the United States and in Britain selling over 25,000,000 books.

While the Dinsmores, Travillas, and Raymonds spend the summer in Nantucket, Lester and Elsie Leland are called to the bedside of Lester's dying brother. His only child, Evelyn, is left in their care. Upon the Lelands' return to Ion from Nantucket, Elsie's dear old mammy, Aunt Chloe, passes away. Lulu and Evelyn become close friends, and the four families decide to spend the Christmas holidays and winter at Viamede. All the children are enrolled in Oakdale Academy as day students. Lulu, however, gets into trouble when she strikes her teacher with a book, and her stubborn refusal to submit to Mr. Dinsmore's authority is eclipsed only by the news that her father is lost at sea.
