Excerpt from The Use of Spiritualism I answer the question you have put to me, - What is the use of spiritualism? And your doubts as to whether it be good or evil in its origin and purpose. If it be of no use, religious thinkers and men of science are bound to enquiry concerning it. It is only of late years we have discovered the uses of a hundred things that our fathers considered either useless or obnoxious. The lever that moves the world - steam - was useless until within a comparatively recent period. Is it so long since an eminent Professor derided the idea of a ship, propelled by steam, conveying a cargo across the Atlantic? In 1843, the House of Representatives at Washington scorned Professor Morse and ridiculed his suggestion as a chimera. Yet, who now wonders when he receives a message by the electric telegraph, although he knows the sender, three thousand miles away, is waiting for his reply Dreams are admitted facts, yet of what use are they? Not one in a thousand can be recalled at all not one in a million is of any worth. Benjamin Franklin asked what was the use of an infant? He must have been strangely startled who first saw the magnet draw towards it a piece of iron. When telescopes and microscopes were invented, they were decried as atheistical inventions. Although Mesmerism is not yet an admitted fact, it is believed in by thousands who a few years ago treated its advocates with hostility and obloquy. These are the comments of Archbishop Whateley on iliat subject. They are as applicable to Spiritualism as they are to Mesmerism. Excerpt from The Truth About Spiritualism Years ago, when I was investigating the phenomena of Spiritualism by attending public classes, seances and meetings, a visitor asked me, "How does the medium do it?" My answer was, "She does it by power from spirits who were once on earth, like ourselves." Spirit power comes through mediums, from spirits, as a gift from Infinite Intelligence. And this is the truth about all phases of mediumship and of spiritual phenomena. Therefore, let it be clearly understood, that every spiritual medium, would be in line with any ordinary mortal without the quality of mediumship, were it not for the fact that a medium is a channel or instrument for spirit power, from spirits. So all credit for psychical phenomena must be given to our spirit friends, and not to the medium. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Higher Aspects of Spiritualism Spiritualism is a subject much maligned and mis understood: discredited by friends and misrepresented by enemies. The newspaper reading public gains its notions from such stray paragraphs as creep into print when some fresh exposure of fraud gives room for a sneer to writers who are neither generally nor specially informed on the subject, so as to handle it with reasonable fairness. Excerpt from The Truth of Spiritualism There is no welcome for Life's grim foe when he stands on the threshold of home, or seizes his victim by the cruel aid of acci dent. And this in spite of religion and churches and priestly teaching, and Chris tianity, so called. For alas! The real Christ like attributes are as rare as they are Utopian, and though man has been rescued from the brute level he IS very, very far from the higher attributes of the Godhead which should be life's crowning expression. Excerpt from The Nature and Tendency of Modern Spiritualism While the library of Spiritualist publications, already large, is fast increasing, it is by no means surprising that books should be written against Spiritualism. Several have been presented to the public; some professing to expose it as a humbug - an illusion; others endeavoring to explain it on natural principles, as originating in magnetism, od force, Ac. These works, in the main, give evidence of learning, and a knowledge of science and philosophy. Had we any idea that this is the proper method of meeting the issue, we should not think it necessary to add to the list. But we have thought from the beginning of the work of Spiritualism, that it was Satanic in its nature and origin, and immoral in its tendency; and that the word of God presented the only antidote to its seductions. This work lays no claim to literary merit, or to philosophic or scientific research. Our course has not been in that direction. Our aim has not been to gratify a taste for such reading, but rather to make our pages useful. Nor have we aimed to please any particular class, but rather to fulfill the requirement to speak the truth in faithfulness, whether men will hear or whether they will forbear. We have written especially for the benefit of those who fear God, and tremble at his word. While we believe that in these pages is contained the only true solution of these mysterious phenomena, we would remind the readers that an intellectual conviction, or mere belief of the truth, will not shield them from the power of these deceptions. Nothing short of humble obedience to the truth, walking in the Spirit of God, will shield from the spirit of error. "If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." Though he may be convinced of the truth, yet if the spirit of error reigns in his heart, the coming conflict will surely find him arrayed "against the Lamb and his army." Excerpt from Spiritualism: A Popular History From 1847 Books about Spiritualism have been so numerous of late that the reader with little leisure probably finds it more difficult than ever to form an opinion. The only new work that can be of real use is a short and clear historical sketch of the entire movement. Those who make history, the living actors, rarely see its significance. The events of to-day take on swollen and gigantic forms, while the events of yesterday and the day before shrink into almost indistinguishable shapes on the dim horizon. It spoils one's perspective and sense of values. It obscures the real meaning of things. Life is a river rather than a procession. To understand it you must ascend the upper reaches, trace its tributaries, and glance at the hills and dales which directed the waters into the river-bed. Most useful of all would it be to rise high above the earth and survey the entire course, from the hill-sides on which the first showers fall to the point where the waters merge into the sea.
