Excerpt from The White-Tailed Deer The common deer of eastern North America was one of the first of our large mammals to be brought to the attention of early settlers. Although originally abundant in Massachusetts and other parts of New England, it seems to have been reported especially from Virginia by early French writers who called it Cerf de Virginie. It was then given the scientific name Cervus virginianus and so came to be known generally as the Virginia Deer. In later years this name proved to be misleading, for the same species of deer, or varieties differing slightly in size and color, was found to be present not only in Virginia but over most of the eastern and central United States. Another name for it, therefore, has gradually come into use, the name White-tailed Deer. This is frequently shortened to Whitetail, which is a very appropriate name, for the deer's tail is entirely white on the under side and when held erect, as the animal dashes through the woods, is very conspicuous. The upper side of the tail, however, is not white but reddish brown or gray the same as the back and sides of the body. The White-tailed Deer withstands the advance of civilization much better than most of our larger mammals and is still common over much of its original range. In Pennsylvania, Virginia, and in parts of New York and New England, where elk, bison, bears, cougars and wolves have completely disappeared, the Whitetail still flourishes. Excerpt from Following the Deer This is more general among hunters than the world supposes. I have never yet met an old sportsman worthy of the name, who has not, sooner or later, gone through with much the same experience and learned the same lesson, and who does not carry about with him, under his canvas jacket, the symptoms of a changed heart. Excerpt from The Story of a Red-Deer Once upon a time there was a little red-deer Calf. You know what a red-deer is, for you of all boys have been brought up to know, though it may be that you have never seen a calf very close to you. A very pretty little fellow he was, downy-haired and white-spotted, though as yet his legs were rather long and his ears were rather large, for he was still only a very few weeks old. But he did not think himself a baby by any means, for he was an early calf and had been born in the second week in May and a birthday in the second week in May is the greatest event that can occur in a red-deer's family. The first thing that he remembered was that he found himself lying very snug and warm in a patch of fern, with the most beautiful pair of brown eyes that ever were seen gazing straight down upon him. Excerpt from The Status of Deer in Kansas Only one other study (see Taylor and Elder, 1959) dealing ex elusively with the deer of Kansas has been made. Although my work was concerned primarily with the white-tailed deer, considerable information was obtained about mule deer from mortality reports and the questionnaire. Some of the statements beyond are based on conclusions reached by workers who studied deer in other states. Excerpt from A-Hunting of the Deer and Other Essays IF civilization owes a debt of gratitude to the self sacrificing sportsmen who have cleared the Adiron dack regions of catamounts and savage trout, what shall be said of the army which has so nobly relieved them of the terror of the deer The deer-slayers have somewhat celebrated their exploits in print; but I think that justice has never been done them.
