The history of 20th Century America is one of great courage, leadership and heroism. Those virtues describe Secretary George C. Marshall, whose service after World War II is easily as important as his leadership during it. Little known, however, was a crucial mistake, made by the young Harvard MBAs he sent to Europe after the war to implement the Marshall Plan. That mistake made no headlines at the time. In fact, though it was kept secret in the 1940s and beyond, its results only occurred thirty years later. This is an ethnographic study of rituals celebrated by multiple castes in two Karnataka villages, and accompanying myths. Family organization is described in detail, along with discussion of women’s complex status in patrilineal kin groups, as background and context. Four types of family celebrations are described and analysed: for benign goddesses helping married women, for restless and dangerous goddesses threatening whole families, ancestor propitiation rites, and ant-hill festivals for a cobra deity. Forty-five colour photos have been added to the original text.

Jane Harrison examines the festivals of ancient Greek religion to identify the primitive "substratum" of ritual and its persistence in the realm of classical religious observance and literature. In Harrison's preface to this remarkable book, she writes that J. G. Frazer's work had become part and parcel of her "mental furniture" and that of others studying primitive religion.
