Threatened Birds Of India

Identification, protection, and monitoring of Important Bird Areas (IBAs) is a major global conservation programme initiated by BirdLife International, and recognized and appreciated by many governments, NGOs, and conservationists. This book is an extension of the BNHS's IBA programme to identify the most threatened and near threatened bird species in India and to recommend measures for their long-term protection.

Threatened Birds of Jammu & Kashmir brings you information about the globally threatened bird species that are presently reported from Jammu & Kashmir. The book depends heavily on Threatened Birds of India (TBI) published in 2012 by BNHS, particularly for historical information, but we have updated the contents by including new and unpublished data. The new information given in this book will help us to assess the present status and distribution of the threatened bird species found in Jammu & Kashmir, and the recommendations for each species will show the way ahead. Thus, this book is not a substitute for TBI or for the Threatened Birds of Asia (TBA) published by BirdLife International in 2001, or the information frequently uploaded by BirdLife International on its website. It is a supplement to TBI, and as it focuses on the threatened birds that are found in Jammu & Kashmir, it is a handy, concise, and updated book that will be of great use to interested readers, as well as decision makers, in serving the cause of conservation.

This book is an extension of the BNHS's IBA programme to identify the threatened and near threatened bird species in Uttarakhand and to recommend measures for their long-term protection. Covering Critically Endangered (like Himalayan quail or mountain quail, White-backed or Oriental White-rumped Vulture, etc.), Endangered (Egyptian Vulture and Black-bellied Tern), malayan Quail or mountain Quail, pink-headed duck, white-bellied Heron, etc., Endangered Vulnerable (Western Tragopan, Marbled Duck, Sarus Crane, etc.), and Near Threatened (Ferruginous Duck, Painted Stork, Great Hornbill, etc.) species, this volume will help in expanding the scope of conservation in India beyond tiger conservation to make it more inclusive.

Written by two eminent ornithologists, the book discusses seven critically endangered, eight endangered, thirty-three vulnerable, and twenty-eight near threatened birds found in Assam.

Edited by the Bombay Natural History Society, this book is the result of five years' exhaustive work by the BNHS. The data, which form the core of the book, have been collected by more than 1,000 people: many hundreds of professiona and amateur ornithologists, birdwatchers, conservationists, forest officials, and others interested in birds. It is the most detailed publication ever produced on the subject of birds or conservation and it uncovers, analyzes and assesses all of the evidence, presenting it together with all the sources. The study has given a detailed analysis of sites that have been identified for bird conservation in India on the basis of globally accepted criteria. Each bird area is introduced with maps, analysis, avifauna section with tables of threatened species present, and a brief description of threatened birds, which have important habitats in the relevant states. The study shows that out of 465 important birds in India, 191 wildlife sanctuaries have been idenfitied as IBAs, 52 are national parks, 23 are tiger reserves, while 198 are not officially protected.
