CHAPTER VII GERMANY: THE BULWARK OF FREEDOM A Nation so manifestly united as Germany showed herself on the 4th of August, 1914, is without precedent in German history. Even 1870 furnishes nothing comparable, since at that time, in the South German assemblies, especially in the Bavarian Chamber--not to speak of the secret aspirations and plans of certain Hessian Ministers--particularism was still very strong, and, moreover, Austria stood aside. Still less, of course, 1813, since the insurrection in the spring of that year was confined to the population of four Old Prussian provinces. The other sections of the German nation were under foreign domination, and for a long time continued to fight on the side of the French Emperor against their own people. The still more remote centuries do not of course furnish any example of unity among the German peoples. Germans were constantly at war with Germans, or, at any rate, large sections of the nation held back from and remained indifferent to the most fateful contests. Thus, the Uh of August, 1914, presented a phenomenon without parallel in the whole past history of Germany. The fact that the two western nations arrived so much earlier at national unity is to be ascribed not only to geographical and historical reasons, but also to the fact that the German central nation far excelled them both in extent of territory and in size of population. It was the very fact that the Roman Empire of the German nation was far too huge in extent for a feudal State that was one of the principal causes why that Empire fell to pieces in an epoch of defective means of communication and defective financial administration. No sooner, however, had this epoch drawn to its final close even in Germany--that is to say, ..

For many the Russian Revolution of 1917 was a symbol of hope. In the eyes of its critics, however, Soviet authoritarianism and the horrors of the gulags have led to the revolution becoming synonymous with oppression, threatening to forever taint the very idea of socialism. The experience of Georgia, which declared its independence from Russia in 1918, tells a different story. In this riveting history, Eric Lee explores the little-known saga of the country’s experiment in democratic socialism, detailing the epic, turbulent events of this forgotten chapter in revolutionary history. Along the way, we are introduced to a remarkable cast of characters – among them the men and women who strove for a more inclusive vision of socialism that featured multi-party elections, freedom of speech and assembly, a free press and a civil society grounded in trade unions and cooperatives. Though the Georgian Democratic Republic lasted for just three years before it was brutally crushed on the orders of Stalin, it was able to offer, however briefly, a glimpse of a more humane alternative to the Soviet reality that was to come.

Lenin's most important and controversial theoretical text Lenin’s booklet The State and Revolution struck the world of Marxist theory like a lightning bolt. Written in the months running up to the October Revolution of 1917, Lenin turned the traditional socialist concept of the state on its head, arguing for the need to smash the organs of the bourgeois state to create a ‘semi-state’ of soviets, or workers’ councils, in which ordinary people would take on the functions of the state machine in a new and radically democratic manner. This new edition includes a substantial introduction by renowned theorist Antonio Negri, who argues for the continued relevance of these ideas.
